Russia at France
France has lost their last two meetings with Russia,
last year in the quarterfinals 3-2 when Igor Andreev allowed Paul-Henri Mathieu only three games in the fifth rubber, and in 2002 when Russia again edged France 3-2, this time in the final.
Those two meetings were on clay — now France thinks they can turn the tide at home on indoor carpet. Unfortunately the French host an explosive Russian team, with Marat Safin returned from injury, and Nikolay Davydenko enjoying the perks of the Top 10 on the ATP Rankings.
French captain Guy Forget knows the weekend rests of the physical and/or mental state of the world-beater Safin. On Wednesday it was revealed that Sebastien Grosjean will possibly be scratched with a back injury. Without Grosjean the French will rely on underachiever Richard Gasquet, veteran Arnaud Clement, and doubles specialist Michael Llodra.
Safin holds a 2-0 career advantage over Gasquet, and 1-0 over Clement. Davydenko is 1-1 versus Gasquet, and 1-0 against Clement.
Roddick, Hewitt, Blake headline ATP San Jose Open
Tuesday, February 14th, 2006
Andy Roddick and James Blake take their Davis Cup mojo into this week’s SAP Open in San Jose, joined by former No. 1s Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and a diverse field of up-and-comers and formerly injured down-and-outers.
But five-time SAP Open champion Andre Agassi, seeded second this week, withdrew from the SAP Open late Sunday night with a lower back injury. Agassi informed tournament director Bill Rapp of his withdrawal after experiencing severe pain in his lower back and down his legs during afternoon practice. Agassi was scheduled to play wild card American teenager Scoville Jenkins in round one.
Hewitt is making his first San Jose appearance since winning the title in 2002 (d. Agassi), and finds himself coming into a tournament ranked out of Top 10 for the first time since June 2004. Hewitt opens the tournament against American Paul Goldstein with a possible second round meeting with big-serving Joachim Johansson.
Roddick is recovering from a five-set loss Friday in Davis Cup that featured multiple hurlings into a courtside bucket, resulting from nerves or an undefined insta-illness, depending on who you ask. Roddick rebounded on Sunday to pummel Romanian Razvan Sabau to put the U.S. in the D-Cup quarterfinals.
