England plans big for the World Cup

The World Cup, which is played every four years, never fails to capture the imagination of the English people.
And after failing to qualify for Euro 2008, it has been a long four years for England fans to wait and remember what it feels like to get behind their team in a major international competition. Now that England is in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, English football fans couldn’t be any happier.
England head to South Africa confident, having easily secured their place for this year’s World Cup. And for the first time in quite a long time, English fans can finally look forward to the World Cup with a sense of optimism.
With players such as Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard ranking amongst the best in the world, together with the other members of the talented England squad, Fabio Cappello could well be the man to guide England to World Cup glory for the first time since 1966.
The draw for the 2010 World Cup took place in Cape Town and with the way the countries have been drawn, it looks like lady luck is really smiling on England. They got a great draw coming up against USA, Slovenia and Algeria in Group C, making the English team as the clear favorites to win the group.
Looking back at England’s history in the World Cup, England has entered all 14 post-war competitions. They qualified through play in the preliminary competition on nine occasions (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1998 and 2002), as host country once (1966) and as reigning champions once (1970).
England have had only moderate success in the World Cup, and that is perhaps a fair indication of their standing in the world game. They won the tournament once, in 1966, when it was held on their own soil and they played all their matches on their home ground, Wembley Stadium, an advantage extended to no other team in World Cup history.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is fast approaching and eyes will be set on South Africa with matches held in nine cities across the land. The world’s greatest footballers will be on display too as football fans around the world are eagerly anticipating a month of football bliss.
On that note, here’s an early rundown of the top five countries to watch out for in this year’s World Cup, starting with the country that won the last biggest tournament in football, the Euro 2008 champions Spain.
Though Spain has never won the World Cup, this may be their best chance ever. Their forwards score goals and their midfield is among the best in the world. At goalkeeping, Iker Casillas is equally very impressive, helping them to engineer a 15 game winning streak to set an international record earlier in 2009.
Although the United States‘ victory over Spain late in the year was one of the biggest upsets in a long time, Spain remains the team to beat. They are in Group H along with Switzerland, Honduras and Chile.
Another team to watch out for is Argentina primarily because they have on their roster the best footballer in the world right now in Lionel Messi. Argentina also has the best defensive midfielder in the world, Javier Mascherano along with a number of very talented youngsters, including Sergio Aguero.
Their manager knows what it takes to win. While they did suffer a bad loss, 6-1, to Boliva, at extreme altitude, Argentina will not have the same problems in June. Argentina is in Group B facing Nigeria, Korea and Greece in the first round of play.

The biggest event in Canada continues.
The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games continue in what should be a plethora of fantastic sporting events with the World Cup and the NBA playoffs just around the corner.
But as far as the Winter Olympics are concerned, Germany is leading the gold medal count with three. The Germans also have four silvers and two bronzes to rack up 9 medals.
Gold medal winners for team Germany are Neuner Magdalena, who won in Biathlon, Loch Felix in men’s singles luge and Huefner Tatjana in women’s singles luge.
Following at second spot is the United States of America with 8 total medals, that’s two gold, two silver and four bronze. Kearney Hannah won the gold medal in women’s moguls for freestyle skiing. While Wescott Seth bagged the gold for snowboarding in men’s snowboard cross.
At the third spot is France with seven total medals; 2 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronzes. Jay Vincent and Lamy Chappius Jason got gold medals in biathlon and nordic, respectively.
Rounding the fourth and fifth spots in gold medal count are Canada and South Korea, tallying two and three golds, respectively.
Athletes that gave pride glory for team Canada are Bilodeau Alexnadre, who won in freestyle skiing (men’s moguls) and Ricker Malle in snowboarding (women’s snowboard cross).

The Super Bowl match-up between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints should be one heckuva’ game. Hell, the conference championship games both teams played on a couple of weeks ago was one of the highest rated football games on TV already. Super Bowl XLIV should be off the chain.
Of course, before the Indianapolis Colts take on the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, sportsbooks across the country have begun to post all kinds of betting options for you to bet on and our guys from Bodog are no different.
One of which has odds on the Super Bowl commercial that will feature Tim Tebow and his family. Bettors take a trip inside the Octagon before they wet their pants watching the Super Bowl this Sunday.
And in case you didn’t get that, businessman extraordinaire and UFC President Dana White managed to squeeze his little UFC pay per view event right before Super Bowl XLIV.
You read it, before we get to see the Colts and the Saints play for the championship in Miami, Randy Couture and Mark Coleman, two Hall of Famers inside the Octagon, will headline UFC 109: Relentless as both try to make their way back to the title picture in the heavyweight division.
UFC 109 on Saturday, February 6 has 11 bouts on the card including the headliner that includes Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. There are five fights on the pay-per-view portion of the card and six preliminary bouts, two of which will be televised on Spike TV.
UFC 109 has a lot of big UFC odds favorites and that is somewhat unusual. Randy Couture is listed as -450 in UFC odds at SBG Global for his bout against Mark Coleman.
Not many people are giving Mark Coleman much of a chance. These two fighters were supposed to meet almost 12 years ago in UFC 17 but Couture was injured and pulled out. Couture is a five-time UFC champion and he has proven that he can still win big fights as he got a unanimous decision against Brandon Vera at UFC 105. Coleman was the first UFC heavyweight champion but he has not fought the same level of competition that Couture has faced recently. Coleman spent much of his career fighting in Japan.
The other co-main event has Nate Marquardt as a -400 favorite against Chael Sonnen. Marquardt is 8-2 in the UFC and was very impressive last time out in UFC 102 as he defeated Demian Maia. The only two losses suffered by Marquardt in UFC action came against Thales Leites and Anderson Silva.
