The biggest event in Canada continues.

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games continue in what should be a plethora of fantastic sporting events with the World Cup and the NBA playoffs just around the corner.

But as far as the Winter Olympics are concerned, Germany is leading the gold medal count with three. The Germans also have four silvers and two bronzes to rack up 9 medals.

Gold medal winners for team Germany are Neuner Magdalena, who won in Biathlon, Loch Felix in men’s singles luge and Huefner Tatjana in women’s singles luge.

Following at second spot is the United States of America with 8 total medals, that’s two gold, two silver and four bronze. Kearney Hannah won the gold medal in women’s moguls for freestyle skiing. While Wescott Seth bagged the gold for snowboarding in men’s snowboard cross.

At the third spot is France with seven total medals; 2 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronzes. Jay Vincent and Lamy Chappius Jason got gold medals in biathlon and nordic, respectively.

Rounding the fourth and fifth spots in gold medal count are Canada and South Korea, tallying two and three golds, respectively.

Athletes that gave pride glory for team Canada are Bilodeau Alexnadre, who won in freestyle skiing (men’s moguls) and Ricker Malle in snowboarding (women’s snowboard cross).

The Olympics have concluded and Phelps has obtained greatness.

Sensational American swimmer Michael Phelps did the impossible, winning eight gold medals, seven of them world records, in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The United States is lucky to have this guy playing for them. The question now is, is he the greatest American Olympian ever?

The answer is a resounding yes. Michael Phelps has beaten the 36-year-old record set by fellow American Mark Spitz, whose seven swimming gold medals at Munich in 1972 were the most at a single Games. That’s until Phelps came up with eight this year.

His remarkable feat is considered to be one of the greatest accomplishments in Olympics history. The 23-year-old cemented his name to Olympic greatness as he won all of the gold medals in all of the events in swimming so far.

Michael Phelps now has 14 gold and 2 bronze medals in his Olympic career. He won six of the his gold, including a couple of bronze medals, in Athens 4 years ago. The rest he won this year, in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Seems nobody can stop Michael Phelps.

That’s exactly what US Olympian Michael Phelps has shown in the swimming competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. As this year’s Games continue to unfold, swimming is one of the most exciting sporting events in this quadrennial event and Phelps is already being crowned with the title ‘’best swimmer in the world'’ after winning gold medal after gold medal in the biggest sporting event of the year.

Michael Phelps, as many people say, could re-write Olympic history in the field of swimming where he is believed to dominate and capture all eight gold medals in all of the events that he will participate in.

Obviously, the 23-year-old American is the heavy favorite to win the gold medal in the men’s 200m freestyle as well. And the expectations don’t end there, Phelps is also the favorite to win gold in the 100m butterfly, favorite to win gold in the 200m butterfly, favorite to win gold in the 200m men’s individual medley and the favorite to win gold in the 400m men’s individual medley.

Phelps already won eight medals in the 2004 Athens Games, six gold and two bronze medals.

Eamon Sullivan of Australia and Alain Bernard of France are listed as co-favorites to win the men’s 100m freestyle as well while Grant Hackett of Australia is also one of the favorites to win a gold medal in the men’s 1500 m freestyle.

Russia – Georgia War resumes Wednesday in the Beijing Olympics

Russia and Georgia, two countries at war, will meet in an Olympic match-up this Wednesday.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics will have ‘’war,'’ probably in a literal sense as Alexandra Shiryaeva and Natalie Uryadova of Russia face Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Chagas of Georgia in an Olympic beach volleyball match.

Russia and Georgia have been blowing each other to smithereens the last couple of weeks. Hundreds of lives have already been lost since Russia invaded the breakaway region of Georgia which happens to be South Ossetia.

And if you missed it on TV, the scenes depicting this war was horrific, to say the least. You can just imagine the hatred that has developed between Russia and Georgia. Knowing that, will the four women players representing the two countries at war meet at center court and shake hands?

International Olympic Committee (IOC) communications director Giselle Davies, for some reason, is happy about the fact that both countries were determined not to withdraw their athletes from the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

‘’That very much reflects the Olympic spirit and values of the Games,'’ Davies said. ‘’The IOC believes this is absolutely the right decision especially for the athletes for whom this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.'’

It's time for Beijing to heat up the sports world.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have finally arrived on the eight day of the eight month of the eight year. August 8, 2008, that date was probably marked all around the globe as people from all walks of life marked that date on their calendar for their personal reasons; be it weddings, opening businesses, birth dates, etc., hoping that the date that comes only once in every hundred years, will bring them good luck.

It was only fitting that the Chinese scheduled the Games of the XXIX Olympiad on the said date as well. But will the date bring good luck to the athletes competing for their country too?

They, after all, need all the luck they can get. The Olympics is the biggest event any sports athlete will have in his sporting career and it is understandable if these athletes feel pressured.

U.S. Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps, is one dude who’ll feel the most pressure for sure. He has the opportunity to become the Olympian to win the most gold medals in history both for a single Games and for a career. He has to win eight more gold medals, giving him 14 for his career.

U.S. basketball team head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Kobe Bryant should also feel the same pressure. For Krzyzewski, he’s probably the best coach in basketball not working in the NBA, despite that, he still has no gold medal to show for since taking over the U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Redemption. Team USA wants it come August 8.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is only a day away and the USA basketball team wants one thing and one thing only, GOLD.

While other countries may be satisfied with a silver or bronze, Team USA don’t have the same luxury. Showcasing the best athletes in the world, there is no excuse on God’s green earth that the red, white and blue shouldn’t retrieve what to them is rightfully theirs.

Taking a deeper look on Team USA, it is fun to watch these players take pride in every sport that they play.

They are backed up by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). The Committee supports American athletes, specifically Olympic athletes and selects which athletes will participate in the Games of the Olympiad, the Olympic Winter Games, and the Pan American Games. The Committee also provides training centers, funds, and support staff to elite athletes.

The USOC also acts as the United States representative for all Olympic matters, including for the evaluation of cities that are prospective nominees to host an iteration of the Olympic Games. As we count the remaining days heading to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, news broke out that we won’t have the privilege of watching Sharapova run around the tennis court when the biggest sporting event of the year starts on August 8.

You read it, the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova won’t be playing for her mother country Russia, pulling out of the tournament because of a right shoulder injury. Sharapova, winner of three Grand Slam singles titles, said that an MRI exam and other medical tests showed she has two small tears in tendons in her shoulder.

Sharapova, before opting out of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, already pulled out of the WTA tournament in Montreal because of the said injury.

‘’After yesterday’s match, I knew there was something seriously wrong with my shoulder,'’ Maria Sharapova said in a posting on her web site under the headline that reads, ‘’No chance of me competing in Beijing.'’

‘’This is something that needs a lot of time to heal, which really hurts me to say that I have to miss the Olympics.'’

‘’I'm currently packing up really quick to hop on the plane and head to [New York] for a second opinion, but I wanted to let all of you know first that there’s no chance of me competing in Beijing. The timing is so unfortunate and this makes me more sad than anything.'’

The 2008 Beijing Olympics' International Olympic Committee has laid down the law.

The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China is almost here and the event’s organizers have begun running here and there to bring its fans the best only the Olympic Games so rightfully deserve.

In fact, the International Olympic Committee has come up with ‘’anti-doping rules'’ that they are hoping to be the answer to the somewhat dangerous trend the world of sports is in these days.

For starters, they have increased the number of tests in these Olympic events. From the 3,600 tests they made back in the 2004 Athens Olympics, they moved it up to 4,500 for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, a clear example how they want to have fair play on the biggest sporting event of the year.

There are some new elements of the ruling too, like one where an athlete may be notified and tested more than once during the same day. If an athlete misses a test on two separate occasions during the Olympic Games, or on one occasion plus twice in the 18 months beforehand, that athlete will be considered to have committed an anti-doping violation.

Mere possession of the prohibited substances will also be considered a violation.

As the ruling body for the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will delegate the responsibility for implementing doping controls to the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Which country will win the most medals in the Olympics?

With merely days to go before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China begin, athletes who will be competing in this grandest sporting event of the year are all set to go and win gold medals for their respective countries.

Different countries are pouring in tons of resources, hoping that their athletes will achieve national glory by winning a gold medal.

While the Olympics do not lack feel-good stories of athletes overcoming adversity to make it to the Olympic Games, the superpowers of the world have traditionally dominated the podium.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, for example, the top-five nations that won the most gold medals are; USA, China, Russia, Australia, and Japan, with USA taking home 36 gold medals, closely followed by China with 32.

The biggest question now is, which of these superpowers will go on and win the most gold in the 2008 Olympics? The Beijing games are almost here.

Of course, we’re still a few more weeks from August 8, 2008, when the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games start. Hopefully, the U.S. basketball team will find the redemption they’re looking for since Europeans started beating them on the basketball courts.

One who’ll also be looking for redemption is swimmer Katie Hoff. She was just a shoo-in to make the 2004 Olympic team. She was just 15 years old then. But something happened back in Athens that made her so eager to redeem herself in this year’s Olympic games.

Her trip for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was the first international flight she did it without her parents, who couldn’t afford the cost of last-minute travel to the Olympics. Yup, her parents were not around to support her. And to make matters worse for the young lady, her coach, Paul Yetter wasn’t even allowed on the pool deck and couldn’t be with Hoff much of the time.

With all these factors, her losing in the 2004 Olympics in Athens was almost known even before she took the flight. She finished 6th in her heat and 17th overall.

Katie Hoff admitted that she really didn’t get over her disappointment in Athens until she went to Montreal for the 2005 World Championships. And back on July 25, 2005, nearly a year after Athens, Hoff finally found redemption in these international tournaments. She won the 200 IM final in 2:10.41.
