The Giants win the first game of the season!
How about that huh? KNown to be slow starters, the Giants won with Eli Manning scoring the first touchdown of the 2008-09 NFL football season. It doesn’t get any better than that.
The question now is, can they return to the big dance and win Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa?
With the New York Giants covering the spread by five points and Eli Manning starting their campaign strong, they’re certainly on the right track.
Week 1 continues on Sunday with 13 games. Let’s start with the St. Louis Rams visiting the Philadelphia Eagles. After a tumultuous season, the Rams come in the brand new season with a new sense of hope. They just signed Steven Jackson to a new contract and with new offensive coordinator Al Saunders taking over, they’re hoping to bring back the offense once dubbed as the greatest show on turf.
However, the Philadelphia Eagles have Donovan McNabb healthy again and I don’t see these Rams beating the Eagles in Philly. Our pick? The Eagles by ten.
The Cincinnati Bengals, led by a focused Chad Johnson, will visit the Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals still have one of the high-scoring offensive schemes in the league but with Rudi Johnson now gone, I’m expecting this offense to slow down a little bit.
Our pick? The Baltimore Ravens cover the spread by a touchdown.

Can New York make that Giant step for Super Bowl XLIII?

Because you shouldn’t count these Giants out again.
The 2008-09 NFL football season is almost here and the New York Giants will start the season as defending world champions. Crazy huh? Who would’ve thought we’d be able to say that about them Giants?
As the new regular season kicks off, the team to watch this year is of course the defending Super Bowl champions the New York Giants. Despite winning it all last season, many people still doubt the talent in this team. Can these guys shock those people all over again?
Many experts did not give credit for the Giants’ playoff run last season since they were not a championship-caliber team. Hell, when they had their somewhat slow start during that season, many people counted them out of even making the playoffs. Was their win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII a fluke?
Fluke or not, the Giants won the Super Bowl and will have the opportunity for a re-peat in the coming season when they begin their road for Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida.
Eli Manning is now the leader of this team together with wide receiver Plaxico Burress. Giants fans expect both guys to be at full health at the start of the NFL season.
Sure, Plaxico Burress played through an injury for most of the season and they still won the Super Bowl. What if Burress was healthy? I guess we’ll find out in the coming season how good will the Giants be with a healthy receiving corps.
Giants’ running backs Brandon Jacobs and Madison Hedgecock are expected to deliver more yards this time.
Brandon Jacobs was the 260-pound battering ram who gained 1,009 yards last season in just slightly more than 10 games. He figures to be the starter and the heart and soul of the Giants’ smash-mouth…
Brett Favre traded to the New York Jets

This is probably the biggest trade we’ll see in the NFL season.
Just when we thought we’ll see Brett Favre playing for the Green Bay Packers in the 2008-09 NFL football season, we saw the Packers trading the future Hall-of-Famer to the New York Jets.
You read it, Brett Favre was traded by the Packers to the New York Jets after all the speculations about ‘’the ultimate Packer’’ moving to either the Minnesota Vikings or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
We already knew the Green Bay Packers were already committed to starting the young Aaron Rodgers at quarterback for the coming season. And after they traded away Green Bay’s football icon, we now know how serious the Packers are of finally putting the young Rodgers to test.
The New York Jets traded a fourth-round pick to the Packers for Favre. A draft pick that increases in value depending on how far Favre takes the Jets in the coming season.
If Favre takes 50 percent of the total snaps with the Jets this season, the fourth rounder becomes a third-round pick. If Favre gets 70 percent of the snaps and the Jets make the playoffs, it becomes a second-round pick.

Will Packers let Favre compete for QB spot?

Apparently, Favre wanted to compete for his old starting QB spot but the Packers are not letting him.
That’s the latest in the ‘’Favre saga’’ as we close in on the coming 2008-09 NFL football season. After the Packers have already expressed their desire to stay with their young, new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Favre wanted to stay with the Packers and compete with Rodgers for the starting spot. Unfortunately for him, the Packers are not letting him to.
Why won’t they let Brett Favre, the guy who has been leading the Green Bay Packers franchise for all these years, have the opportunity to prove that he still got it? 
One thing’s for sure though, Packer fans at Lambeau won’t be too happy of Rodgers taking their main guy’s spot in the coming season.
Favre admitted in a telephone interview that he did not report to camp with the Green Bay Packers after general manager Ted Thompson pleaded him to delay his arrival. He also said he offered to compete for his old job but was told that was simply impossible.
Favre also admits he has been speaking with the Packers’ rivals, Minnesota Vikings, specifically Vikings coach Brad Childress but says it wasn’t tampering like the rest of the Packers organization has been claiming.
Childress confirmed this, explaining how this talk with the ‘’ultimate Packer’’ went.
‘’I’ve always felt like he could play. I told him so right after the game last year when they beat us 35-0. I wish he would have retired. I told him that to his face,’’ Brad Childress said. ‘’He’s still got some zip on it. In my mind it’s no different than me talking to Donovan McNabb as he’s [reporting] to training camp or talking to Brian Westbrook. I communicate with people in this league. You don’t…”
No Favre’s No.4 Packers Jersey at Lambeau Yet

It looks like the scheduled retirement of Favre’s No.4 jersey at Lambeau is now put on hold.
In case you haven’t heard, Brett Favre has postponed retirement yet again and has showed his intentions to play in the 2008-09 NFL football season. The problem is, the Packers have already committed to start their ‘’QB for the future’’ Aaron Rodgers and as far as Favre’s place in the team is concerned, he may have to be contented with a backup role to the new starting quarterback.
Of course, being the competitor that Brett Favre is, he doesn’t want to play backup to anyone, EVER. Leading him to ask the team for his immediate release and make that now infamous phone call to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Green Bay Packers organization has been accusing the Vikings of exchanging ‘’secret messages’’ with the future Hall-of-Famer since. Sure, the Vikings are denying it but since they are one of the bitter rivals of Lambeau Field, Favre probably figured that if his team doesn’t want to give him his old spot back, he’ll just sign with the enemy to further infuriate the team that no longer wants him.
If Favre did sign with the Minnesota Vikings, I wonder how will Favre be received when the Vikings visit the Packers at Lambeau in the coming season? Hmm…
The Packers organization seem to be confused on how to deal with this situation. They are, after all, on the verge of losing the city’s icon to another team, something that their fans won’t forgive them for, EVER. At least for now, they have decided to put the scheduled ‘’Brett Favre No.4 jersey retirement‘’ on hold, not because Favre could sign with another team but because of the mere fact that Favre ain’t retired just yet.
