Can the Sooners win without Bradford?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

They have to, or else, they’re looking at one long season ahead.

In case you didn’t know, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford suffered a sprain to his right AC joint, located at the top of his shoulder, to kick off the 2009 NCAA college football season.

That’s right, Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, is out to kick off the Sooner campaign and although the Oklahoma Sooners do not expect Bradford to need surgery on his sprained right shoulder, this is still more than enough reason to be worried.

sam_bradfordHead coach Bob Stoops said the initial evaluations by doctors showed that Sam Bradford did not suffer any damage to his collarbone, rotator cuff or other parts of his shoulder when he sprained his AC joint just before halftime in Oklahoma’s 14-13 loss to no.20 BYU.

Yes, they’re trying to project that this injury to their starting quarterback is not that big of a deal and they expect Bradford to be back in four weeks. Wishful thinking perhaps?

For now, the Sooners need to find a quick fix and as far as that is concerned, redshirt freshman Landry Jones wasn’t bad when he filled in for Bradford, give the fact his first college pass came in the third quarter.

Jones seemed ready, having embraced assistant Josh Heupel’s message of preparedness. Asked how the injury might change his life, Jones responded, ”I go from the backup quarterback to now the starter.”

”I thought Landry did a great job in the second half, carried himself great with his demeanor. Everything he did, I thought he handled it as well as you could expect and better,” Stoops said. ”Believe me, in the game, I thought his execution and what he did was good.”

Can the Sooners finally win the BCS?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Those guys need to keep up with the Gators first.

Tradition, pageantry and all out excitement will fill the air when the 2009 NCAA college football season kicks off. The anticipation has been building all summer for college football enthusiast around the nation. After such an exciting and competitive year in 2008, the 2009 campaign expects to be even better.

All three Heisman trophy finalists are back including previous winners Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford. Speaking of Tebow, the Florida Gators will be looking for their third national title in the last 4 years and since this will be the last year that Tebow will be playing for Florida, it should be interesting how this one plays out.

sam_bradfordAs for the teams you should be betting on once the season gets here, it is understandable that the Florida Gators is one of those teams. Two national titles in three years proves that the Gators are on a class of their own. The Gator offense was nearly untouchable in the SEC last season, averaging a lucrative 43 points per game ranking 4th in the nation. The Gators may not have the explosive talent of Percy Harvin back, but Tim Tebow will still have plenty of talented targets in his sights.

Expect wide receiver Riley Cooper to have a breakout year on the outside.

Then we have the Oklahoma Sooners. Sam Bradford deciding to return for his senior season is huge for the Sooners, especially since they lost many of their weapons to the NFL. Oklahoma is going to have to revamp its offensive line and its receiving unit since they lost a couple of running backs as well. If Bradford had decided to bolt for the NFL, things would’ve been worse.

The one bright spot for the Oklahoma Sooners is…

Florida V Oklahoma, it’s personal now!

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Yes, it’s personal now, since the Sooners have probably motivated Florida’s Tim Tebow to have the game of his life.

The Sooners need all the help they can get coming to the 2009 BCS national championship game. This is the biggest college football game of the season and the Sooners certainly don’t want to end up losing out on the opportunity to bag the big one.

However, the Oklahoma Sooners calling Florida quarterback Tim Tebow the ‘’fourth-best quarterback in the Big 12′’ was a HUGE mistake. I mean, Tebow has strong legs to go with his rocket of an arm, meaning, he can beat you as bad on the ground game as well as in the air, like he usually does, and pissing him off was a bad judgment call on Oklahoma’s part.

2009 BCS National Championship GameSo who made that mistake for the Oklahoma Sooners? Dominique Franks. Franks started stirring things up for the BCS title game over the weekend when he had the audacity to call Tebow a distant no.4 among quarterbacks in the Big 12.

Dominique Franks said Tebow ranks behind their Oklahoma Sooners quarterback AND 2008 Heisman trophy winner Sam Bradford, (figures…) Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy and Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Graham Harrell.

‘’I think our quarterbacks are better,’’ Dominique Franks said. ‘’Just the way they conduct themselves and how they play on the field. I just think, playing against those guys, it’s a lot harder to prepare for those guys than it is for Tebow.’’

Of course, Franks’ comments WILL create quite an uproar in Florida since Tim Tebow was a runner-up for the 2008 Heisman trophy. Hell, Tebow was THE favorite to win the Heisman this season until Sam Bradford was awarded with the hardware.

And as expected, the rest of the Florida Gators were not fond of the…

Alabama V Utah in 2009 Sugar Bowl

Monday, December 15th, 2008

It’s so unfortunate for the Crimson Tide to end what has been a dominant year this way.

The Alabama Crimson Tide stayed on top of the BCS rankings the longest this 2008 NCAA college football season. Head coach Nick Saban has done an awesome job keeping the Crimson Tide at the top of their game.

Unfortunately, the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a 31-20 loss to the Florida Gators at the wrong time, during the last few weeks of the season. The defeat couldn’t have come at a worse time, since it gave Alabama no chance to bounce back like other one-loss teams like, ironically Florida and the Oklahoma Sooners, two teams facing off in the BCS championship game in Miami. So instead of playing for the national title, they had to settle for the 2009 AllState Sugar Bowl.

Alabama Crimson TideDespite that, the Alabama Crimson Tide was STILL one of the country’s most compelling teams, returning to national prominence in coach Nick Saban’s second season.

Before Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama had gone through a rough decade; four coaches, four losing seasons, stifling NCAA sanctions and just one appearance in a major bowl. Saban brought the Crimson Tide back and despite losing out on a chance to play for the BCS national title, the season they had is still a success, anyway you look at it.

They meet the Utah Utes, also returning to prominence with the strong campaign they had this year.

Four years ago, Utah became the first non-BCS school to reach a major bowl since the format was created in 1998. The Urban Meyer-coached Utes defeated Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl to complete their first perfect season since…

Can Tebow win the Heisman again?

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

The Heisman, is Tim Tebow really the huge favorite to win it?

The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award is considered as the most prestigious award in American college football. The Heisman is given annually to the top football player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). And since the 2008 NCAA college football season is almost done, we’ll discuss who will be challenging Florida’s Tim Tebow for that piece of hardware.

Starting off with Sam Bradford, this guy is a talented Big 12 quarterback who should be at the top of anybody’s ballot after he out dueled Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell in a 65-21 rout in Norman.

Tim TebowBradford has been the model of consistency all season for the Oklahoma Sooners, completing 68.2 percent of his passes with 42 touchdowns and only six interceptions. His only blemish has been tossing two interceptions in a 45-35 loss to Texas on Oct.11. Bradford has been one of the better quarterbacks in college football all season, and the numbers prove it; 3,710 passing yards, 42 touchdowns, 4 rushing touchdowns.

Next up is Colt McCoy of the Texas Longhorns.

Colt McCoy is an inspiring leader. He’s a phenomenal quarterback and his team might end up winning the national championship because of him. But the fact is, his production does not compare to his Big 12 South rivals, but that doesn’t mean his numbers aren’t impressive. For the year, he’s got 3,134 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 8 rushing touchdowns.

McCoy is one of only three quarterbacks playing at FBS schools who have passed for more than 3,000 yards and ran for more than 500 this season. (Rice’s Chase Clement and Illinois’ Juice Williams are the two others.) McCoy has…
