Mavericks beat Hornets in preview of First Round of 2008 NBA Playoffs
Thursday, April 17th, 2008
The Dallas Mavericks just showed the New Orleans Hornets who’s boss.
With merely days before their first round match-up with the Hornets begins in the first round of the 2008 NBA playoffs, the Mavericks sent a message to New Orleans after beating the Hornets by double-digits, 111-98, last Wednesday night.
The win guaranteed the Dallas Mavericks of the 7th seed in the Western conference, letting them avoid a first round encounter with the red-hot Los Angeles Lakers, who are seeded no.1 for the first time since the 2000 playoffs. That also means they’ll face this Hornets team again to kick-off what is shaping up to be a wild second season in the wild wild West.
And if last Wednesday’s win over the New Orleans Hornets was a preview of their best-of-seven, first round playoff series, it looks like the Dallas Mavericks just might have an easier task this time compared to the one they had last year against then no.8 seed, Golden State Warriors.
‘’This was definitely a win we wanted to get,’’ Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki said. ‘’The Lakers are probably the hottest team in the West. We definitely didn’t want to face them in the first round. [New Orleans] had a great year, but I think we match up pretty well.’’
New Orleans came in locked into the no.2 seed in the Western Conference. To avoid the Mavericks, New Orleans had to win and have the Denver Nuggets win later that Wednesday night.
Well, the Nuggets did their part, winning 120-111 over the Memphis Grizzlies behind the 21 points Allen Iverson had. Unfortunately for the Hornets, Jason Kidd had his best game of the regular season as a member of the Dallas Mavericks against them…
Will the Mavericks get Jason Kidd before Feb.21?
Monday, February 18th, 2008
February 21 is the trading deadline in the NBA.
And as far as the 2007-08 NBA basketball season is concerned, we have FOUR huge trades completed already heading into the trading deadline on February 21. Nice huh?
Trade No.1 is when the Boston Celtics came up with a deal on draft day to land Ray Allen. Of course, the following trade after that was bigger after they sent Al Jefferson to Minnesota to land Kevin Garnett. And mind you, that’s BEFORE the regular season even started.
A few weeks ago, trade No.3 happened when the Los Angeles Lakers dealt both Javaris Crittenton and Kwame Brown to the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol. And just like trades one and two, another trade was completed soon after Kobe got the help he was looking for.
The Phoenix Suns sent Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat for the seven-foot, 300-plus pound, Shaquille O’Neal. The deal sent Shaq back to the Pacific division. THAT means we’ll be seeing a lot of Shaq and Kobe on one basketball court all over again.
With merely DAYS away from the trading deadline on February 21? Who will get traded next? Rumor has it that Jason Kidd STILL wants out of the New Jersey Nets. There were also rumors that the Dallas Mavericks are interested in landing the triple-double machine.

The Dallas Mavericks victory is also a win against the spread, easily covering the -5 point spread given by the NBA odds makers.

NBA Betting Line: Dallas Mavericks at Orlando Magic -4.5
The Dallas Mavericks had a better luck at the Amway Arena against the elite Orlando Magic. The Dallas Mavericks cruised to their big win, crushing the surging Orlando Magic, 107-98. Forward Hedo Turkoglu’s triple-double didn’t help the Orlando Magic to outscore the Dallas Mavericks. The Dallas Mavericks were the leaders in the early quarters, but the Orlando Magic got within 83-80 on forward Rashard Lewis’ three-point shot with 7:15 left. The Mavericks did not give the Magic any chance to shoot and the Mavericks managed to put the game away.
The Dallas Mavericks had lost 2 consecutive games but their victory today improved their NBA record to 31-15 SU and 19-24 ATS. Though the NBA odds makers have the Orlando Magic listed as 4.5 favorites, the Dallas Mavericks still emerged as winners against the spread. The Orlando Magic has won 4 straight games, but their loss dropped their NBA record to 31-19 SU and 31-17 ATS.

NBA Betting line: Los Angeles Lakers at Washington Wizards +4.5
Los Angeles Lakers all-star Kobe Bryant was unstoppable, playing an impressive game, and outscoring the Washington Wizards by himself.

The Los Angeles Lakers advanced to a record of 30-16 SU and 27-18-1 ATS. The Los Angeles Lakers are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games and are 17-8 SU in their last 25 games when playing Washington Wizards. The huge point margin gives the Los Angeles Lakers a clear win against the spread. The Washington Wizards had lost 3 games in a row, and their NBA record sinks to 24-22 SU and 27-19-1 ATS.
