Saints – Vikings for NFC Championship

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Who dat, who dat, who dat say gonna’ beat dem Saints? Who dat, who dat, who dat say gonna’ beat dem Saints?

Um… Maybe the Vikings can? Yep, that is exactly what Saints fans from the Big Easy are wondering after Brett Favre came up with four freaking touchdowns to beat the Cowboys and take the Vikes to the 2010 NFC championship game.

The Minnesota Vikings showed last week how incredibly difficult it can be to score against their defense with the way they’ve been on Romo’s ass all game long last week. And since Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been struggling during the last few games of their regular season campaign, you have to wonder how the heck will Brees be able to take himself out of this funk against arguably one of the best defenses in football.

The Vikings, thanks to Brett Favre, have become one of the best teams in the NFC. Their 8-0 record at the Metrodome is a testament to what type of team they can be with the crowd behind them. The problem is, they’ll be playing on the road this Sunday in front of what will definitely be a hostile crowd at the Big Easy.

The Vikings have lost 4 of their last 5 road games including their last 3 in the regular season to the Bears, Panthers, and Cardinals. Minnesota scores 5 points less, averaging 26 points per game and gives up 5 more points a game, 23.5 points per game, on the road. The rushing offense, lead by Adrian Peterson who remains without a 100 yard game since week 10 of the regular season, drops nearly 30 yards a game, going from 130.6 to 106.5 rushing yards.

The defensive line, which served the Vikings well against Dallas with 6 sacks, also suffers a steep decline in production on the road. Averaging 3.4 sacks at home, the Vikings still manage to pressure the quarterback, but they average just over 2.5 sacks per game. That’s definitely something you want to hear if you’re Drew Brees.

As far as the New Orleans Saints are concerned…

Robinson returns to Slam Dunk contest

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Because he thought defending slam dunk titles is under NBA rules.

Either that or Nate Robinson is just trying to get everybody’s attention and hype up the All-Star slam dunk contest because the annual event right smack in the middle of the 2010 NBA basketball season has already lost LeBron James

Yup, we won’t be seeing LeBron James after just almost a year ago, he referred to himself in the first, second and third person all at the same time, saying, ”Right now I’m preliminary putting my name in the 2010 contest Saturday night. LeBron James is saying in 2010, in Dallas Stadium, he will compete.”

As far as reigning champion Nate Robinson is concerned, WILL BE because, according to him, ”the champion has to go back.”

Nate Robinson said, ”The NBA, they asked me, ‘Do you want to do it?’ And at first I wasn’t sure. This is my fourth time doing it, so I know people probably get sick of seeing me dunk, but like I said, the champion’s got to go back.”

”And I guess, hopefully, I mean if I don’t win it, it’ll be good because I don’t want to go back no more. But if I do [win], and they want me to go back again, I guess so. Keep going until I lose.”

However, while Robinson believes the NBA is requiring him to defend his title, NBA spokesman Mark Broussard says otherwise. Broussard says the league is NOT requiring Robsinon to participate in the slam dunk contest for the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend. In other words, they want LeBron and they’re sick and tired of Nate.

”He was asked to come back and defend his title, and he agreed to do so. There is not a rule saying he has to,” Broussard said.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement requires players to compete in All-Star Saturday events only if they have been selected as All-Stars, or chosen to compete in the Rookie-Sophomore Game.

Cowboys eliminated from NFL Playoffs

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Too bad the Cowboys bumped into Favre last Sunday.

In what turned out to be one of Brett Favre’s greatest performances in postseason play, the ageless one scored four touchdowns, racking up 234 yards while giving up no interceptions in the 34-3 annihilation of the Cowboys in the 2010 NFL playoffs.

Yep, you read it, Brett Favre FINALLY beat the Cowboys in the playoffs as he connected with Sidney Rice not one, not two but THREE times before hooking up with Visanthe Shiancoe for their fourth trip in the endzone to send the ‘Boys packing back home to Texas.

But as good the Minnesota Vikings have been offensively, it was their pass rush that decided the game. Led by the Vikings’ fourth year defensive end Ray Edwards, the Vikings defense pressured Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo all game long, forcing him to commit the same mistakes that made the name Tony Romo infamous during the postseason.

Oh yes, Tony Romo, after beating the Eagles in their wild card match-up to get his first win in a playoff game, was back to his usual form in the postseason. Fresh from his stellar performance against the Eagles back in Texas, where he racked up 244 yards to score two touchdowns, he was virtually no-existent in Minnesota as the Vikings defense forced Romo to commit four turnovers, that’s three fumbles and an interception.

As far as Brett Favre is concerned, he was right on target. He looked motivated to finally beat this Dallas Cowboys team at this time of the year. Hell, the guy was still scoring when the game was already won and you can bet your ass the Cowboys didn’t like it one bit.

Yep, Favre ran up the scoreboard people, well…

Can Brett Favre finally beat Dallas?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

2-9 all-time and 0-3 in the playoffs.

That’s what Brett Favre is trying to improve on when his Minnesota Vikings play hosts to the Dallas Cowboys in their big NFC divisional match-up at the 2010 NFL playoffs.

As of this writing, the Minnesota Vikings are three-point favorites to beat the Dallas Cowboys and advance to the NFC championship game. But if I was a betting man, I’d think twice before I bet on the Vikes because of the fact that Favre hasn’t beaten the Cowboys in the playoffs, and this Vikings team lost two of their last three games coming in.

Still, if there’s a guy who can lead the Vikings to a playoff win over the Cowboys, it’s Brett Favre. At 40 years old, nobody thought he’d still be playing at this level and this Sunday, the Vikings need him now more than ever or it’s an early summer for ‘em.

The Dallas Cowboys on the other hand are one of the hottest teams in the league after finally posting their first winning record in December for quite a while. They have won three games in a row, scoring 75 points overall while only giving up 14.

Of course, the main reason for their turnaround has been the steady play of quarterback Tony Romo and the elevated play of their defense. In last week’s 34-14 playoff win over the Eagles, Romo completed 23 of 35 attempts for 244 yards and two TDs. Romo didn’t give up any interceptions.

Adding to the success the Cowboys have been having recently is the play of second year running back Felix Jones. He had an outstanding game last week against the Eagles with 148 yards rushing on 16 carries. For the season, Jones has a 5.9 yards per carry average.

On the defensive side of the ball…

Jets V Chargers in AFC Divisonal Game

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

The hottest team in the playoffs meet the hottest team of the season.

That’s exactly what we’ll be having in this AFC divisional match-up of the 2010 NFL playoffs as the New York Jets, became the hottest team of the playoffs after shocking the Bengals last week, face the San Diego Chargers, the hottest team of the season after winning a freakish 11 straight games.

Yup, the San Diego Chargers sure look unbeatable at this point of the year but after the New York Jets ”weaseled” their way to a wild card playoff spot before shocking the Cincinnati Bengals last week, it’s clear the Jets have the momentum.

The New York Jets, coming off a remarkable 24-14 victory in Cincinnati, were great against the pass allowing just 110 passing yards. Their defense did break down against the run last week allowing the Bengals to gain 171 rushing yards on 21 attempts.

But since the Bengals had no other choice but to run with the football, thanks primarily to the outstanding performance of Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis when he virtually shut Chad Ochocinco down, the Jets are probably better off letting the opposing team run with the football and just take the passing game completely out of the equation.

The Jets are the number one ranked pass defense in the NFL, allowing just 150 yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks complete just 51.5 percent of their passes against the Jets.

On the offensive side of the football, Mark Sanchez completed over 80 percent of his passes to help the Jets beat the Bengals and join only a select few who have won their first playoff game as a rookie quarterback.

The San Diego Chargers, on the other hand…
