Who will meet in MLB World Series?
We are, along with other baseball fans across the country.
You can almost feel the intensity of the 2009 MLB World Series as the ALCS and the NLCS will decide which two teams will come out to play for the world championship.
In the ALCS, the New York Yankees are looking to return back to the big dance as they go up against the Los Angeles Angels, a team looking to get at least one team from Hollywood in the World Series.
In the NLCS, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to
return to the World Series and defend the world title they won last year after dominating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games. They do battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team looking to give Joe Torre his first world championship ring since moving to Hollywood.
What’ll happen if the Yankees face their old mentor and take on the Dodgers? Will the World Series be settled in Hollywood this year? Can the Philadelphia Phillies win back to back titles and beat whichever team that’ll come out of the American League?
Here’s a look at all four possible matchups and who we think will take it. Unfortunately, we’re not picking the Los Angeles Angels to win ANY matchup. Sorry.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2009 MLB World Series
Another cross-town World Series match-up in the making? As everybody knows, this kind of scenario never materialized like the New York Yankees – New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals – Kansas City Royals matchups they were gunning for before mainly because there still is the ”baseball doesn’t exist west of Kansas” reaction.
And since East Coast fans usually can’t stay awake to watch the late-night action during the regular season, you can’t expect much of the East Coast to tune in for the World Series. This matchup will also have the Weaver faceoff as the Angels’ Jered Weaver goes head to head with the Dodgers’ Jeff Weaver.
I personally would want to see two teams from Hollywood gunning for the World Series title and since both teams have two managers who share the same freaking last name, you just can’t go wrong with this one. We’re picking the Dodgers.
New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 MLB World Series
Can the Phillies become the first team to win back to back World Series since the 1999-2000 Yankees? This would be an intriguing match up as former Indians aces collide with Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee and New York’s CC Sabathia. It could also result in Pedro Martinez taking the new Yankee Stadium mound for the first time in the postseason since his Red Sox shocked the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS.
The New York Yankees have won their season series match up 4-3, including a 12-0 blitz the first time they met back in March. Our pick in this matchup? The New York Yankees.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees in the 2009 MLB World Series
This match up features the nation’s biggest cities and biggest viewing audiences that most television networks covet to happen. Aside from that, this also banners Joe Torre, who won four World Series and made all 12 playoff appearance in his stint with the Yankees. When he joined the Dodgers in 2007, he has led them to back-to-back NL West titles. In addition to Torre, there is the fact that the Dodgers used to play in Brooklyn. And Yankees fans would love to have another chance to jeer Manny Ramirez
We’re picking the Yankees again.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Angels in the 2009 MLB World Series
There has been so much drama that has happened for both teams, the Angels suffered the tragic loss of pitcher Nick Adenhart while the Phillies also lost longtime broadcaster Harry Kalas. On the field, the Angels finished second in the majors in runs scored, the Phillies fourth. Both also finished in the top 10 in stolen bases and in the top five in slugging percentage. And then there is the Bobby Abreu angle. Abreu was dealt from the Phillies in 2006 just as the organization officially steered in the new era that features Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels.
Our pick? The Philadelphia Phillies will win back to back World Series titles.
