New York and Philadelphia face-off in NFL
And although these teams from NYC and Philly won’t be playing for the World Series, this one should be as exciting since we’ll have two of the best in the NFC.
Yes, Week 8 of the 2009 NFL football season continues with a classic rivalry in the NFC. The New York Giants take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, and since both teams are playing to be on top of the very competitive NFC East, expect this one to be one of the most physical games you’ll ever see in the NFL this season.
As of this writing, the New York Giants have a half game lead over both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. All three teams haven’t lost more than two games after seven weeks and it looks like the NFC East is once again turning into the best division, not only in pro football, but in sports, period.
Last Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles started taking on the NFC East, beating the Washington Redskins 27-17 on Monday Night Football. Everybody picked the Eagles over the Redskins coming into this one and after scoring the first 17 points of the game, it was clear the Eagles were dead serious in claiming the top spot of the division.
This Sunday, the Eagles have the Giants, the second of three teams from the NFC East they have to take on in succession. Can Philly get another win before they take on the Dallas Cowboys next week?
The Eagles have been struggling offensively lately. Despite beating Washington last Monday night, their loss to the Oakland Raiders two weeks ago is still more than enough reason for Philly fans to be worried. And since Brian Westbrook could be out for what could be one of the biggest games the Eagles will play this season, ”worried” could be an understatement.
For all ya’ll who missed it, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook suffered a concussion after he was inadvertently kneed on the head in their game against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field last Monday night. Westbrook was out cold for several minutes before being revived and helped off the field.
Westbrook, 30, has already missed one game this season due to an ankle injury. He bounced back from that one, coming up with his best game of the year after getting 141 rushing and receiving yards. Unfortunately, his best game was during their humiliating 13-9 loss to Oakland.
Can Westbrook return in time for their NFC East rivalry game with the Giants? Don’t count on it. The chances of him being medically cleared to play this week appear slim.
Luckily for the Eagles, the Giants ain’t doing so good themselves lately. Eli Manning is sputtering on offense while the defense, their pass D in particular, is looking as poor as it has ever been. It’s clear that the Giants need to get guys like Aaron Ross and Michael Boley back.
Our pick? Although Westbrook could be out for this one, we’re still picking the Eagles since we all know Andy Reid will opt to pass the ball anyway. I’m expecting Donovan McNabb to have a huge game and take advantage of New York’s struggling secondary.
