Ana Ivanovic WTA Tennis 2009 Australian Open1st seeded Jelena Jankovic has pulled through to the third round of the 2009 Australian Open with a thrilling win over Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium. Jelena Jankovic who is ranked number 1 in the WTA standings is trying to get her first Grand Slam singles title, beat Kristen Flipkens 6-4 7-5. The 23-year-old Serbian Jelena Jankovic WTA tennis player lost the last U.S. Open title to Serena Williams and also made the semifinals in the 2008 Australian Open and the 2008 French Open while only lasting till the fourth round of the 2008 Wimbledon Championship. Jelena Jankovic would be playing Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who beat Nathalie Dechy of France 1-6 6-1 6-3 in the second round of the 2009 Australian Open.

 

Ana Ivanovic is getting back on track in the 2009 Australian Open after defeating Italian Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-2 to move onto the third round. Ana Ivanovic lost in the 2008 Australian Open final to Maria Sharapova then moving on to winning her first Grand Slam title at the 2008 French Open and gaining the No. 1 ranking in the WTA rankings.

 

“I was in this situation before French Open last year, coming into the tournament as pretty serious finalist,” Ana Ivanovic said. “That experience will help me a lot to approach this Australian Open.”

 

“I improved a lot since last match. I was committing much more, coming to the net more often,” she said, adding she still had plenty to improve. “When you come against top players or high-ranked players, you automatically raise your level and your consistency. That’s something that I can do”

 

Dinara Safina moved on to the third round of the 2009 Australian Open after rallying for a three-set win.

 

“It was amazing, I’m so happy to be back here,” Ana Ivanovic said. “I had lots of great matches here last year.”

 

Dinara Safina overcame 44 unforced errors in a 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-0 victory over fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova and will move on to the next round to play No. 25 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Dinara Safina lost to a qualifier in the first round in the 2008 Australian Open however went on to be runner up at the 2008 French Open, win the Olympic silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and reach the 2008 U.S. Open semifinals. Not bad for an aspiring tennis superstar.

 

“I’m just trying to find my game. I’m trying to be aggressive,” Dinara Safina said, explaining the erratic nature of some of her shots, before admitting that she was enjoying her status as a leading seed. Now when I practice there is more people standing watching me … I get a better court, I’m not anymore just Marat’s sister,” Dinara Safina added.

 

Unseeded Jelena Dokic who is a former Wimbledon semifinalist making her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam after a three years to deal with personal problems has reached the third round by ousting Number 17 seed Anna Chakvetadze 6-4 6-7 (4) 6-3. Number 10 Nadia Petrova had a 6-3 6-2 win over India’s Sania Mirza. Also advancing were Number 7 Vera Zvonareva of Russia, Number 15 Alize Cornet of France and Number 19 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
