Can Miami U finally beat Georgia Tech?
Thursday, September 17th, 2009
We’ve seen a lot of interesting finishes on the football field the last few days.
For those of you who want more, the third week of the 2009 NCAA college football season should have enough fantastic finishes that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
That’s right, we have great games for you to bet on this week and since we still can’t forget what the Miami Hurricanes did a few days ago, we’re going to take a look who they have this week.
The Hurricanes got back into the AP Top 25, checking in at no.20 and virtually assuring they’ll be a ranked program when they next play the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Thursday.
The Hurricanes are fresh from a 38-34 victory over Florida State that came down to the game’s final play, which should keep them in high spirits when they play Georgia Tech. The problem is, the Yellow Jackets have beaten Miami four straight times, including a 41-23 laugher (it was 41-10 at one point) a season ago, a loss that kept the Hurricanes out of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.
Can the Hurricanes redeem themselves on Thursday? I have a feeling they will.
On Friday, we have the Boise State Broncos taking on…
Allen Iverson joins the Memphis Grizzlies
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
For Iverson, it’s personal, for the Grizzlies, they’re just hoping they didn’t throw three million dollars away.
That’s how much the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to pay Allen Iverson for the coming 2009 NBA basketball season. Yes, Iverson will play for the Grizzlies after the 10-time All-Star signed a one-year deal worth $3.1 million in Memphis.
This makes Allen Iverson the biggest name yet ever to spread across a Grizzly uniform since Memphis sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers and back when Shareef Abdur Rahim was playing with the Grizzlies for Vancouver.
Of course, A.I. was more than happy that the Memphis Grizzlies finally gave him an opportunity to redeem himself after the disastrous year he had in Detroit. And since Iverson, despite being a 10-time All-Star and a former league MVP, wasn’t the most sought after free agent this offseason, he definitely has a lot of redeeming to do in the coming season.
”This year for me is so personal,” Allen Iverson said at his introductory news conference.
”It’s basically going to be my rookie season again. It hurts, but I turn the TV on, I read the paper, I listen to some of the things people say about me having the season that I had last year and me losing a step, things like that. They’re trying to put me in a rocking chair already.”
Grizzlies fans welcomed Iverson like a hero. He walked into the FedEx Forum with a standing ovation in an atmosphere that felt like a pep rally.
Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace called Iverson one of the NBA’s all-time greatest guards and officially welcoming A.I. is a great day for the team, the Grizzlies’ loyal fans and the city of Memphis.
The team had been courting Iverson since July, a process that sped up with a meeting Monday night in Atlanta over dinner with the guard, Wallace, team owner Michael Heisley and coach Lionel Hollins.
For now, they’re convinced that Iverson can…
Bills-Patriots on Monday Night Football
Monday, September 14th, 2009
The Bills and the Patriots will play on Monday Night Football.
Yep, the first Monday Night Football game of the 2009 NFL football season will feature the highly anticipated return of Tom Brady to football after being out of the field for New England’s entire campaign last year.
This year, Tom Brady is hoping to help his team return to the top of the food chain and a win on their first game of the season will sure put the questions on his health to rest.
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady’s combined focus on returning to the top of the league aren’t the only reasons New England Patriots fans are excited this season. Brady not only returns to an offense that re-wrote the record books in 2007 but he returns to an offense that has acquired new weapons like running back Fred Taylor, wide receivers Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis and tight end Chris Baker.
Defensively, a major overhaul has taken place in the back end that so badly let the team down last fall. The Pats are hoping that they’ll be able to improve on a pass defense that gave up too many big plays, too many third-down conversions and waaay too many touchdowns.
The defense remains anchored by a front line that includes Ty Warren as well as linebacker Adalius Thomas. Young players like defensive rookie of the year Jerod Mayo now have a year under their belt and should be able to help that defense now with Richard Seymour gone.
Add in free agents Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs, newly acquired Derrick Burgess and draft picks Patrick Chung (safety), Darius Butler (corner) and Ron Brace (defensive line), and you have a re-tooled group of defenders ready to play the type of defense New England’s teams have been known for in the past.
For the Buffalo Bills, young quarterback Trent Edwards did not regain the confidence he displayed during last season’s 5-1 start, and failing to lead the offense to a single touchdown in four preseason starts led to the firing of offensive coordinator Turk Schonert.
The Bills wanted to use training camp to adjust to…
The 2009 NFL Football Season Begins
Thursday, September 10th, 2009
And for the first game of the season, we have the defending Super Bowl champions Pittsburgh Steelers playing the team with the best record in the league last season, the Tennessee Titans.
And as far as that game goes, LenDale White will be one of the story lines heading to the very first game of the 2009 NFL football season. You see, White had the audacity to desecrate Pittsburgh’s terrible towels merely days before his Titans and the defending champion Steelers go head to head for the season opener this Thursday.
A case of bad judgment on his part? One thing’s for sure though, this really puts things in perspective as far as the anticipation for the NFL season is concerned.
And as far as Troy Polamalu and the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned, you can bet your ass that they are pumped up for the opener. One, they are coming in as the defending Super Bowl champions. Two, they probably just want to beat the crap out of LenDale White.
The Pittsburgh Steelers look to be in as good a shape as any Super Bowl winner to make a second run at another Lombardi Trophy. The Steelers made it through training camp with no significant setbacks other than losing starting guard Darnell Stapleton to knee surgery for the season.
They return 19 of their 22 starters, including a healthy Rashard Mendenhall, their top draft pick in 2008 who was knocked out for the season in the fourth game. He will join Willie Parker, who missed five full games with injuries, as the one-two punch in their backfield.
As far as the Tennessee Titans are concerned, they are hoping that they can have a repeat of last season’s success when they virtually came out of nowhere to take over the AFC.
With Kerry Collins patrolling the offense, the Titans were able to become one of the heavy favorites to win the AFC after Tom Brady’s week 1 injury virtually took the New England Patriots out of the picture.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t come up with anything in…
Still betting on a QB named Manning?
Thursday, September 10th, 2009
The Manning brothers have become two of the best quarterbacks in the game and yet, they don’t have anyone to throw the football to this year.
You read it, Peyton and Eli Manning have quite a dilemma coming to the 2009 NFL football season. Both of these guys lost their primary receivers and without that playmaker to throw the football to, they better learn some pointers from Peterson and start running for TDs.
However, if there’s anyone in the league who can win games without a decent wide receiver, a Manning can. And as far as both Peyton Manning and Eli Manning are concerned, the 2009 season will definitely bring both of these guys new challenges but I expect both of them to persevere.
And since Peyton Manning is the older brother, we’ll start with him. The Indianapolis Colts will be missing some very familiar faces for the 2009 NFL season. The most glaring of which is the departure of premiere wide receiver Marvin Harrison.
However, as unfortunate as the absence of Marvin Harrison will be on the Colts’ playbook, many probably saw this one coming as early as last season and even the season before that. You see, Harrison has struggled to stay on the field with health issues the last few years. And although he was able to come back from it time and time again, he was simply never the same guy the Colts knew to be.
Fortunately for the Colts, they still have guys like Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez to keep the passing game going. Let’s see how will it all work.
Meanwhile, his brother Eli Manning also lost his favorite target with Plaxico Burress set to do time in prison for a couple of years. To make matters worse, Eli also lost his no.2 guy when the Giants chose not to re-sign 13-year veteran Amani Toomer.
Of course, New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese tried to compensate by using two of the Giants’ first five picks in April’s draft to fill the open receiver positions. Reese took UNC’s Hakeem Nicks in the first round before drafting Ramses Barden in the third.
Only time will tell if both guys can make…
