Brett Favre wins game with 32-yard TD

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

That just proves that Brett Favre’s career is FAR from over.

In what has been one of the more exciting finishes of the still young 2009 NFL football season, Brett Favre stunned the red hot San Francisco 49ers last Sunday in a game that should’ve been settled on the ground.

SHOULD’VE BEEN since this was a game between the two best running backs in the league, that being Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings and Frank Gore of the San Francisco 49ers.

brett_favreUnfortunately, both backs were not that explosive as football fans had hoped. Adrian Peterson did rush for 85 yards for the Minnesota Vikings but failed to find the endzone. As for 49ers running back Frank Gore, his day ended early in the first quarter with a sprained ankle.

So who was the big story of the day with A.P. neutralized and Gore out? Easy. Brett Favre. Favre came up with a game-high 301 passing yards, completing 24 of his 46 passes, to lead the Vikes to the 27-24 win.

But it wasn’t as simple as it sounds.

With less than two minutes left and the Minnesota Vikings down 24-20, Favre drove down the field, making huge plays after another. And with 12 seconds remaining in the game, Favre found Greg Lewis for a 32-yard touchdown that gave them the lead for good and ended the game with the classic Favre finish.

Amazing.

”The offensive line was fired up. Adrian was fired up, and the…”

Watch Out for Melanie Oudin

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Serena Williams may have fired some ill-comments towards umpires but that’s not the story as far as women tennis in the U.S. is concerned.

The story in the 2009 U.S. Open has shifted from the Williams sisters to a virtual unknown named Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Georgia. The 70th-ranked Oudin has been handing out upsets to some of the sport’s biggest female stars, including Russian aces Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova. She also defeated 13th seed Nadia Petrova in three sets, making it crystal clear that this 17-year-old ain’t no pushover.

Sure, the magical ride for the young Melanie Oudin went to a crushing halt when she went up against no.9 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, losing 6-2, 6-2. But the fact of the matter is, Oudin has arrived into the scene of women’s tennis in style and everybody will recognize this young talent the next time she sets foot on a tennis court.

melanie_oudin”This has been a great experience for me. I had a great run here,” Oudin told the crowd of 23,881 during an on-court interview right after losing the match to Wozniacki, an honor usually reserved for the winner. ”I hope to come back next year and do even better.”

Doing better might just be a little harder for her though.

She upset four more established players, including the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova and Beijing Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva, to become the youngest quarter finalist at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 1999.

Making the story even better is the fact that Oudin’s last three victories each came after dropping the first set. But her start against Wozniacki was quite inauspicious, she lost 14 of the first 18 points under the bright lights in the big city.

With ”BELIEVE” stamped in all capital letters on the heels of her pink and yellow sneakers, Oudin certainly never gave up, her ground strokes did.

It should be interesting how she does next season…

What happens when the two best running backs in football face-off in one field?

That’s exactly what we’ll find out when the 2009 NFL football season resumes at the Metrodome where the Minnesota Vikings play hosts to the San Francisco 49ers.

You read it, the season continues with the Minnesota Vikings hosting the San Francisco 49ers in a game of two undefeated teams. Both teams are looking for their 3rd straight win in as many games and in a face-off between the two best running backs in the league, something’s gotta give.

peyton_manningThe San Francisco 49ers will bring their monster back Frank Gore to the Metrodome to do battle with Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson, currently the league’s leading rusher. In a game like this, the X-Factor may decide the outcome and as far as that is concerned, obviously, the X-Factor is Vikings quarterback Brett Favre.

Brett Favre currently is doing a solid job in his first two outings with the Vikings. The NFL’s all-time leader in touchdown passes and interceptions, Favre ranks first in the league in completion percentage (77.1) and second in passer rating (110.2) through Sunday. He has thrown three touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Shaun Hill better come up with his A-game for the San Francisco 49ers because once both teams’ running game cancel each other out, this game will be won in the air.

This is definitely THE game to watch this weekend. Our pick? Vikes by a touchdown.

On Sunday Night Football, the Indianapolis Colts will gun for their 3rd straight win against the Arizona Cardinals who have limped to a 1-1 start out of the gate.

The Indianapolis Colts are now relying on…

Can Alonso win Singapore Fair and Square?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Who will crash his car on purpose for Alonso to take the checkered flag this time?

Ah yes, conspiracies and controversies have not been new to the 2009 F1 season. And in case you didn’t know, the entire Renault F1 team is in the middle of the latest one coming to this weekend’s Singapore GP.

Yup, the 2009 F1 Singapore Grand Prix is this weekend and Fernando Alonso will try to defend the title he earned last year. After all, the Singapore GP is the ONLY race in the F1 racing calendar held at nighttime and since the inaugural race last season, the event has become one of those races you just have to win if you’re a Formula One driver.

fernando_alonsoHowever, there seems to be a problem about the way Fernando Alonso won the race in Singapore last year. It turns out that team Renault ordered Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash his car on purpose to give Alonso an unfair advantage.

You see, Nelson Piquet Jr. crashing his Renault last year meant that Alonso had taken his first pit stop before the safety car was deployed. Thanks to Flavio Briatore’s ingenuity, the plan worked perfectly and Alonso ended up with the win on Singapore’s inaugural night race.

Fernando Alonso, as of this writing, still claims he was on the dark about the devious plan to give him the edge through the safety car. As far as he’s concerned, he doesn’t know squat about the incident.

Alonso is confident that he’ll be able to win again in Singapore, with or without his Renault teammate deliberately crashing his car for him.

”The car is working well at most circuits so I believe we are competitive enough to get close to the podium, which has to be my target this weekend,” he said.

”I like it [the circuit] because it’s quite…”

Can the Browns score against Ravens?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

It has been all about defense last week.

Defense was at full display last week and if you don’t believe me, just ask Darren Sproles who ran into a brick wall named Ray Lewis last Sunday.

Yep, that was just nasty. And with the Jets D neutralizing Tom Brady before the Giants D picked off Tony Romo thrice, betting on the under will probably be a good idea once the 2009 NFL football season resumes this Sunday for Week 3.

And speaking of defense, Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens will once again be flexing their muscles, only this time, they’ll be at home hosting what is usually an anemic Cleveland Browns offense.

brady_quinnThe Cleveland Browns are still winless this season, losing their first two games in which they have been outscored 24-7 and 17-0, respectively in the second half. To make matters worse, the Browns defense didn’t do any better as they were steamrolled by the opposition’s running game.

And as far as the running game is concerned, the Baltimore Ravens found a new scoring machine in Willis McGahee last Sunday against the Chargers when he gave the Ravens their first two touchdowns in a 31-26 victory over San Diego.

That’s before the Ravens iced the game with a monstrous defensive stop that saw Chargers running back Darren Sproles stopped cold by Ray Lewis behind the line of scrimmage.

Ouch.

”That was probably one of the greatest plays of my career because of my team, because of what we did as a team,” said Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, a former Super Bowl MVP, 10-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

”When the game was on the line, as soon as…”
