Can Serena Williams win the US Open?
Thursday, August 20th, 2009
The last Grand Slam of the tennis calendar is on.
The 2009 U.S. Open is here and we’ll probably see some poor sap get beaten down by Serena Williams again.
And since Serena Williams is the defending champion of the U.S. Open, not to mention the fact that she’s still fresh from her huge win at Wimbledon, the younger Williams sister will definitely be the woman to beat.
Serena has this tendency to make her opponents look decidedly ordinary with her speed and strength, unless of course she’s playing against the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova who’ll probably make Serena look like a freaking gorilla compared to Sharapova’s long legs, smooth skin and…
ANYWAY, Serena is the current holder of the U.S. Open singles title and her odds should shorten as summer tournaments heat up. She’s the best athlete on the women’s tour and she has a slight, but significant, age advantage on her older sister Venus Williams. It’s hard to imagine Serena not at least making the semis of the U.S. Open and despite being ranked no.2 in the world, she should be the odds-on favorite.
Then we have Dinara Safina. It is hard to find a serious tennis analyst who doesn’t think she is one of the best players in the sport right now. Without a shadow of a doubt, she is one of the best in the world at the moment with all of her success in the past year, but the general consensus is that Serena is still the world’s best player due to her multiple Grand Slam titles in the last year. A win over Serena at Flushing Meadows could sure fix that.
Elena Dementieva has never won a Grand Slam singles title but she did make the finals of the 2004 U.S. Open. With her odds set at +1000 (10/1) she is underrated and is more of a threat to win the 2009 U.S. Open than Sharapova, Ivanovic, Safina, and Azarenka.
Players that should almost certainly be…
Early 2009 NFL SPORTSBETTING Picks
Monday, August 17th, 2009
It’s time to bet on these pigskin wars again.
SPORTSBETTING.com will be putting out lines on every NFL game of the coming 2009 NFL football season, from Week 1 through Week 17 with their new prospective bets, but right now they have the NFL Games of the Year posted up in the NFL props section and some of ‘em land on the second week.
Week 2 of the regular season sees a number of notable Games of the Year, including the first-ever regular season game played at the new state-of-the-art facility the Dallas Cowboys now call home.
Who will help christen the new stadium? The divisional rival New York Giants. This should be a great game. The Cowboys are favored by 2.5 points for the stadium’s regular season debut, and even tough bettors know Romo will drop the ball again at some point, they sure STILL love ‘em Cowboys.
Dating back to 1986, the Cowboys have the edge against the Giants in home games during the month of September, going 4-2 straight up and 5-1 against the spread. Dallas is also very impressive when favored by 4-points or less, going 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS. In the Giants’ last nine games when underdogs of 4-points or less, they’ve gone 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS.
Who’d be your pick?
Another game of interest involves the team that made the biggest trade in the offseason, the Chicago Bears. Denver traded QB Jay Cutler and a draft pick to the Chicago Bears for QB Kyle Orton and draft picks.
Cutler and the Bears will be in tough during…
Yang beats Tiger Woods to win PGA Title
Monday, August 17th, 2009
That means Tiger will be concluding the PGA season with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
You read it, Tiger lost yet another Major, losing out on the opportunity to conclude the year with the 2009 PGA Championship. This will be the first time Tiger will finish the year without a Major. Leading us to believe that the injury he suffered a few months ago could be more serious than we thought.
So instead of a victorious Tiger Woods to end the golfing season on a high note, (since most golf fans root for Tiger to win EVERYTHING anyway…) we have this 37-year-old Korean old fart Y.E. Yang celebrating as if it was only the first time he won something big through all the years he has been playing this game.
Wait, it was the first time Y.E. Yang won something big on a golf course. And what a memorable win it was since he just became one of a few people who managed to take down Tiger.
What made it even more special is the fact that Tiger looked unstoppable, looking like he was on his way to finally winning his first Major of the year. Hell, he was on top of the leaderboard, leading by more than one shot going into the final round of the tournament. And do you know how Tiger finishes when he’s on top at crunch time? An unbeatable 14-0.
The problem is, Y.E. Yang wasn’t even remotely intimidated by it all.
”It’s not like you’re in an octagon where you’re fighting against Tiger and he’s going to bite you, or swing at you with his 9-iron,” Yang said through an interpreter. ”The worst that I could do was just lose to Tiger. So I really had nothing much at stake.”
After Yang saw Woods in birdie range…
Can Brawn GP still win 2009 F1 title?
Sunday, August 16th, 2009
In case you haven’t noticed, teams are starting to catch up to the once unbeatable mean and green machine.
After a red hot start to the 2009 F1 season that saw Brawn GP on the podium for eight straight races, their last two outings have been a little different with Jenson Button scoring a mere six championship points and Rubens Barrichello dropping three before his DNF in Hungary.
For what it’s worth, Jenson Button still remains on top of the leaderboard as far as the race for the drivers’ title is concerned with Brawn GP still leading the race for the constructors’ title.
But since other teams are starting to close in on them, specifically Red Bull, these guys definitely have something to be worried about. Red Bull’s Mark Webber is now only 18.5 points behind Button while the team in general is only 15.5 points adrift of Brawn GP.
Is Brawn starting to lose its edge or has the competition started to get more competitive? As far as team boss Ross Brawn is concerned, he’s putting the blame on the team’s recent modifications to the BGP001 while also acknowledging that YES, the competition has become a little bit stronger.
”It’s true that the opposition has got a lot stronger, but in the first part of the season we were getting the most out of the tires and unexpectedly we’ve had problems there (since),” team boss Ross Brawn said.
”It’s certainly related to some modification which…”
Who will win the NASCAR Carfax 400?
Sunday, August 16th, 2009
Are you ready for another weekend of fast cars?
The 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads up north to the Michigan International Speedway for the Carfax 400, the first of two stops at MIS this year.
Michigan is a two-mile D-shaped oval (so to speak) with 18 degrees of banking in the turns. People describe it as a sister track to either California or Texas Speedway, although similar track lengths do not really mean the tracks are otherwise similar.
Michigan International Speedway’s Aug. 16 NASCAR Sprint Cup race will be called the Carfax 400 under terms of a title sponsorship agreement that has been announced with the company that provides vehicle history reports.
The company, which will be the title sponsor of a Cup race for the first time, is also sponsoring the NASCAR Nationwide Series Carfax 250 at the track. The doubleheader marks the first time MIS has had the same corporate sponsor for both NASCAR events on the same weekend.
The Cup series has been racing at Michigan twice a year since 1969, except in 1973 when the track was visited just once. Mark Martin has the most wins here among active drivers with four, though he’s also made more starts than many other drivers, 46 in all. Martin’s last win here was in 1998 and all four of his wins came in Roush Fords, as this is his first season with Hendrick Motorsports.
Bobby Labonte has three wins at Michigan and…
