LeBron James to get help from Shaq?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The tipping point.

That is exactly where Shaquille O’Neal is at this point of his career. It seems it was only yesterday when he won three championship rings with Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles, since then, he moved on to win another one in Miami before failing to do the same in Phoenix.

Now that he’s stay in Arizona is about to expire, rumor has it that the Cleveland Cavaliers are interested in having Shaq play alongside LeBron James. Sure, at 37 years old, Shaq won’t be able to lead ANY TEAM deep into the postseason, but with No.23? It might just work.

lebron_jamesAccording to the rumors, the Cleveland Cavaliers are willing to trade Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic for Shaquille O’Neal. O’Neal will be making $20 million next season in the final year of his contract while Wallace will make $14 million and Pavlovic $4.9 million with only $1.5 million guaranteed.

The salary exchange is close enough to make the trade between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns work.

Sure, the Suns are giving up a four-time NBA champion like Shaq but the fact of the matter is, the seven-footer is on the verge of retiring anyway and since they would end up saving $10 million in the deal, that will at least point them towards the right direction in rebuilding the franchise.

If Ben Wallace takes a buyout after he gets traded to Phoenix, the Suns would save even more money. Wallace has already hinted that he is contemplating on retirement after the Cavs, heavily favored to play for the NBA championship, lost to the Orlando Magic after six games in the Eastern Conference Finals.

It is very unlikely for Wallace to postpone…

The 2009 United States Open Begins

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

We’ll see soon enough if Tiger Woods is really back to his old form.

The 2009 U.S. Open Championship golf tournament promises to be an exhilarating test of pure skill as current US Open champion, Tiger Woods, is determined to defend his title.

You read it, the U.S. Open is on as the world’s top pro golfers will be forced to play accurate drives down the pinched narrow fairways and avoid the ‘’open roughs’’ before lining up their pitches and putts with careful precision in a course from hell that has been compared to ‘’trying to hit a ball on top of a VW Beetle.’’

tiger_woodsThe 2009 version will take place on the Bethpage Black course at Farmingdale, New York from June 18 to 21.

Bethpage Black is a challenging test of golf at par 71 and a staggering distance of 7,297 yards. The USGA is in charge of the U.S. Open and they make the playing conditions so difficult that only the stout of heart have a chance to win.

Two of the main challengers to Tiger Woods will be Angel Cabrera and Geoff Ogilvy; Cabrera won the U.S. Open in 2007 and Ogilvy was the champion in 2006. Henrik Stenson of Sweden, on the other hand, won the recent Players’ Championship and stamped himself as a leading contender for the U.S. Open title. Stenson was rock-solid coming down the homestretch of the Players.

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington is another threat to the American players. Harrington has a history of playing well and winning in the major tournaments

Phil Mickelson should be a contender as well, but he has a history of yielding to the fierce pressure of the U.S. Open. Of course, it would still be foolish to count Mickelson out. He’s, after all, a past Master’s winner.

The U.S. Open golf tournament is the second…

Floyd Mayweather Jr. suffers Injury

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Bad time to suffer an injury huh?

For all ya’ll looking forward to the scheduled Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Juan Manuel Marquez fight on July 18, I guess you would have to wait a little longer.

It turns out that the bout is now postponed after Floyd Mayweather Jr. suffered a rib injury in training last week, forcing him to delay his highly anticipated return to boxing. You see, he was happy with the way he ended his career until Manny Pacquiao decided to desecrate the sport with his antics. He decided to return to boxing in hopes of finally putting an end to it and reestablish himself as the true no.1 pound for pound fighter in the world.

In order for him to do that, he needs to beat Juan Manuel Marquez first. The winner will end up with a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately, with the rib injury to floyd_mayweatherMayweather, that opportunity would first have to wait and understandably, the pound for pound king ain’t happy.

‘’I am extremely disappointed that this fight has to be postponed,’’ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) said in a statement. ‘’I was training very hard and looking forward to getting back in the ring.’’

According to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Mayweather tried to work through the injury but just couldn’t because of the pain.

‘’It was very painful,’’ Schaefer said. ‘’I don’t know the extent of it is, but he went to go see a doctor and he is in tremendous pain, so we have no choice but to postpone the fight. He obviously knows how dangerous of an opponent Marquez is and he wants to make sure he is in the best shape possible.’’

‘’We will find out more in the next few days as he goes and sees the doctor again. He definitely wants to fight and he wants to fight Marquez. He knows it’s a big fight. But at the same time, he knows he has to be in the best shape.’’

‘’He said, ‘Let’s see what dates are available and…”’

Lakers look to take 3-1 lead over Magic

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

If they can, then we’ll probably start paying attention to those guys.

The road to the title continues in the NBA with Game 4 of the 2009 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic set to be played this Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

Last Tuesday night, the Orlando Magic made history by taking their very first win in the NBA Finals, beating the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3, 108-104. That’s right, this franchise finally won one.

kobe_bryantYou see, it wasn’t so long ago when a Magic team led by a young Shaquille O’Neal was swept by Hakeem Olajuwon’s Rockets. This franchise finally winning a game in the NBA Finals last Tuesday night was vindication, to say the least.

Of course, despite making history, the Los Angeles Lakers are still in front in this series, 2-1. The Orlando Magic still have a lot of work to do too, they still need to beat this Lakers team three more times to win the title, not to mention the fact that they need to win this Thursday and tie the series to give themselves a shot in this best of seven affair.

The problem is, the Lakers will come out more focused, even more determined, and a little agitated.

You see, the way the Lakers finished Game 3 should be more than enough reason for these guys to feel apprehensive. The Lakers team that finished that game wasn’t the same team that won the first two games of this series. In Game 3, the Lakers gave it away to the Magic, with Kobe Bryant missing key free throws and committing huge turnovers down the stretch that paved the way for Orlando to win it.

Maybe the Lakers took Game 3 off since they did have a commanding 2-0 lead coming into Amway Arena last Tuesday. Maybe they just needed to find out how far can the Magic take them if a win in a game as big as Game 3 was at stake. Maybe the Lakers just wanted to keep this series interesting. After all, would you still be interested if the Lakers went up 3-0 in Orlando?

One thing’s for sure though, the Lakers…

Detroit to win the Stanley Cup tonight

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

You bet because there’s no way why this series is going to a seventh game.

It’s no surprise that the Detroit Red Wings are in full control of the 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Finals. After simply destroying the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5, there’s no way for you to think that Detroit doesn’t have the Cup in the bag.

It was an annihilation as the Detroit Red Wings got one step closer from being crowned as the 2009 Stanley Cup champions after humiliating the Penguins, 5-0 last Saturday. The win extended Detroit’s series lead to 3-2, putting them only a win away from their 12th Stanley Cup, their fifth one in 12 seasons.

detroit_red_wingsSure, every hockey fan who’ll be watching Game 6 live this Tuesday should be behind the Pittsburgh Penguins since the game will be played on their home ice but the fact of the matter is, the Red Wings know letting Pittsburgh extend this series to a Game 7 will be detrimental to their run for the title and they can’t give these Penguins any momentum whatsoever.

Sure, a Game 7 back in Detroit will be fantastic for Red Wings fans but if you’re Detroit, why would you risk extending it to another game when you can end it in Pittsburgh on Tuesday?

‘’The other game is three days away so I don’t know if [the shutout] has much bearing on what’s going to happen in Pittsburgh,’’ Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood said after Game 5.

‘’It’s more important for us to get a little break so we can be at full capacity when we go to Pittsburgh.’’

History suggests the Detroit Red Wings will hoist the Stanley Cup for the second straight year as 14 of the last 19 teams to win Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals have went on to win it in six games.

Last year, the Penguins won Game 5 trying to…
