Team to bet on this 2009 MLB Season

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Baseball has already settled in and it’s time to determine where you can put some money on and win big.

One month into the baseball betting marathon that is the 2009 MLB baseball season, is behind us and there have been some surprises thus far. The latest one is of course Manny Ramirez being the latest guy to be linked to banned substances.

With that said, I know most of you won’t be wasting their time (and money) betting on the Dodgers since they’ll have a lot to figure out in the next few weeks with the fallout of the Manny Ramirez issue.

toronto_blue_jaysSo, which team is the best ‘’money’’ team in baseball now? Some of you might say the Boston Red Sox are, while some will go with the Tampa Bay Rays. Well, NONE of them are ‘’money’’ teams. But if you’re looking for the best team to bet on, you can’t go wrong with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays are 20-10 overall with a profitable 11-4 record at home and a healthy 9-6 record on the road. A $100 a game bettor would have a profit of approximately $950 if they wagered on every Jay game this season so far (depending on the lines when they bet on Toronto).

Over / Under bettors can take note, the Jays have posted 19 overs and 11 unders so far this year.

Toronto hasn’t played many games against teams from its own division so far but it has played a three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles and it swept the O’s 3-0. You can’t win in baseball without good pitching and the Jays have two pitchers who rank in the Top 10 MLB money pitchers.

As the ace of Toronto’s rotation, you expect wins from Roy Halladay and he hasn’t disappointed this year with a 6-1 record. But as good as he has been for the Jays, Scott Richmond has been a pleasant surprise. Last season, Richmond only started in five games all season, grabbing 1 win and 3 losses.

This season, Richmond has already pitched in five games and has paid off for those who backed him, racing out to a perfect 5-0 mark.

The Toronto Blue Jays are second only to…

Lakers – Rockets Game 3, it’s Personal

Friday, May 8th, 2009

After the jawing, the technical fouls and the elbows, yes, this series is personal now.

With homecourt advantage in their favor, the Houston Rockets look to take a 2-1 series lead over the Los Angeles Lakers when their best of seven series in the 2009 NBA Playoffs resume for Game 3 in Houston.

After shocking the league with a 100-92 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1, the Houston Rockets were bullied, tossed around and whooped in Game 2 as the Lakers obviously played this pesky Rockets team more physical than any other team they played all year.

lakers_rocketsThe result was a 111-98 win for the Los Angeles Lakers, tying this series to a game apiece as they head for Texas looking to take the homecourt edge back.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 40 points, including an elbow on Ron Artest that infuriated the Artest we saw who became infamous at the Palace of Auburn Hills a few years ago. And in case you missed the game, Game 2 was more like a brawl than a basketball game.

Emotions boiled over in the second half as Lakers guard Derek Fisher and Rockets forward Ron Artest were both ejected from the game.

Derek Fisher was ejected for throwing a vicious elbow on Luis Scola who was making a pick. Fisher saw the Rockets forward before he went through him with what looked like an uppercut.

Ron Artest, on the other hand, was ejected a few minutes later when he hauled for Kobe’s ass after the Lakers star threw another elbow on him.

You just know that the Toyota Center won’t…

LeBron, Cavs to KO Hawks in Game 2

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

LeBron winning the MVP was probably the most surprising but expected result we’ve ever had in these races for league MVP.

How? Well, if Kobe Bryant won it again or if Dwyane Wade won it for the first time, it STILL wouldn’t surprise anybody. All three, including LeBron, are legitimate contenders for the MVP trophy this 2009 NBA basketball season, it just so happened that LeBron did just a little bit more to win it.

And since LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were more dominant than Kobe’s Lakers or D-Wade’s Heat at least for the first round of the 2009 NBA Playoffs, LeBron winning the MVP was inevitable.

lebron_jamesHowever, while NBA fans see this year’s race for the MVP trophy as close as it had ever been, the ballots tell otherwise. LeBron James won by a landslide, getting 109 of a possible 121 first place votes to win the hardware. Kobe Bryant finished second while Dwyane Wade, who was booted out of the first round by the ATL, finished third.

And since LeBron always had a thing for the dramatic, the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar chose the very gym that he claims to be the place where he first became a star, the gym at the St. Vincent – St. Mary High School, his alma mater.

‘’This is a place where all my dreams started and where I thought they could become real,’’ LeBron James said. ‘’There’s really not a better place.’’

‘’I’m 24 years old and I’m receiving this award, I never thought it would happen this fast. I never dreamed about being MVP, but if I said I didn’t enjoy this award I’d be lying. Hard work pays off and dreams do come true.’’

Normally, MVP trophy presentations were done inside the winner’s team practice facility or arena but since LeBron James singlehandedly brought the NBA back to prominence, the league let LeBron do whatever it is he wanted to do.

Let’s hope this motivates him again against the pesky…

Can Boston beat Orlando in Game 2?

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Apparently, the Magic didn’t buy the ‘’KG out for the playoffs’’ news they’ve been hearing about lately.

In case you haven’t heard, the second round of the 2009 NBA Playoffs are finally underway and in the East, we have two teams that were just fortunate enough to hold on and win over their pesky first round rivals.

The Philadelphia 76ers got the attention of the entire Orlando Magic roster when they were able to steal the precious homecourt advantage from Disneyland during Game 1 of their best of seven first round series.

They even got Dwight Howard suspended for the critical dwight_howardGame 6, setting themselves up for what would’ve been one of the biggest shockers in this year’s playoffs. Unfortunately, Orlando pulled through, eliminating the pesky Sixers in six games.

The Boston Celtics, on the other hand, went through an obviously harder hurdle. Unlike Orlando, Boston was extended to a pivotal Game 7 by the Chicago Bulls, a team looking to repeat what they accomplished a couple of years ago when they eliminated then defending champions Miami Heat, in the very first round.

Unfortunately for them, it didn’t happen, and the Celtics managed to close out the Chicago Bulls with Kevin Garnett still wearing a fashionable suit.

This Wednesday, the Orlando Magic and the Boston Celtics will meet for Game 2 of their best of seven second round series with a spot in the 2009 NBA Eastern Conference Finals at stake and as far as the Magic are concerned, they’ll be ready for Kevin Garnett, in uniform or in street clothes.

‘’I don’t have any idea if he’ll play, but we watched film on him,’’ Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. ‘’Besides that, it’s not like you’re going to go, ‘Kevin Garnett? I never heard of him. What does he do?’ I think we can make that adjustment pretty quickly. I think we all have a pretty good idea of who Kevin Garnett is.’’

The Magic went 0-2 against the Celtics in…

Mine That Bird uncertain for Preakness

Monday, May 4th, 2009

In case you missed it, a longshot won the first leg of this year’s Triple Crown trail.

You read it, it was a huge payday for some people who like underdogs as virtual longshot Mine That Bird came out of nowhere to win the 135th Kentucky Derby last weekend.

It was a shocking result to what has been a disappointing outing for some of the Derby favorites. One of the favorites, Friesan Fire, deemed by some as the horse that will finally give the sport its first Triple Crown champion in years, finished second to last.

mine_that_birdWho would’ve thought that Mine That Bird would go on and win the Kentucky Derby after being listed by sportsbooks with 51-1 odds of winning? Heck, who would’ve thought that the thoroughbred would snatch the race lead after running in dead last coming to the final turn?

Incredible.

And while many bettors are now probably putting their money on Mine That Bird already for the next leg of the Triple Crown, that being the 2009 Preakness Stakes at the Pimlico Race Course, we found out that the Kentucky Derby champion’s availability for the next big race is still uncertain.

Yes, after shocking horse racing fans, Mine That Bird is still far from being a certainty to head to the second leg of the 2009 Triple Crown trail. This year’s Preakness Stakes is scheduled on May 16 and as of press time, the thoroughbred’s owners are not giving their prized property the green light for Pimlico just yet.

‘’We’ll let the horse tell us,’’ Mark Allen, who owns Mine That Bird with Dr. Leonard Blach, said. ‘’We’ll run some blood work on him, make sure it’s where it should be.’’

‘’The plan was that if he showed something here, to skip the Preakness and go to the Belmont, like his dad.’’

Mine That Bird is a son of Birdstone, who won the…
