Praying for March Madness seeding
Friday, March 13th, 2009
Selection Sunday is coming.
‘’The calm before the storm’’ is on as conference tournaments are now underway coming to the 2009 March Madness bracket tournament. It’s all about seedings to those teams hopeful to win the national title by season’s end with their seeds for March secured.
But in leagues such as the Atlantic Sun, Patriot and Sun Belt, it’s winner-take-all. There are no at-large bids, and the teams know that if they want to be in the March spotlight, they must win their league tournament first.
In the Big 12 Conference, the Kansas Jayhawks won the regular-season title by a game over Oklahoma, which lost twice while star big man Blake Griffin was sidelined by a concussion. One of those losses was at home to the Jayhawks. Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma are NCAA locks, while Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State look good for bids.
For the Big East, the Louisville Cardinals won the regular-season title by a game over Connecticut and Pittsburgh. If the Cardinals can also win the league tournament, they’re a good bet for a No.1 seed.
Seven Big East teams; Louisville, second-seeded Pittsburgh, third-seeded Connecticut Huskies, fourth-seeded Villanova, fifth-seeded Marquette, sixth-seeded Syracuse and seventh-seeded West Virginia, are NCAA locks.
The eighth-seeded Providence Friars could play itself into the field, but at a minimum, that would require getting to the semifinals, which would mean a victory over Louisville in the quarterfinals.
Cincinnati, Georgetown and Notre Dame could get firmly onto the…
Tiger Woods gets 71 in the first round
Friday, March 13th, 2009
Tiger Woods ran into some trouble upon his return to stroke play in the CA Championship. Tiger Woods shot 71 this Thursday in the first round at the Doral CA Championships. This marks the first stroke play Tiger Woods has played in since his 2008 US Open victory over Rocco Mediate dwindling down to a playoff at last year. Despite the efforts, Tiger Woods wound up behind Jeev Milkha Singh, Prayed Marksaeng and Retief Goosen who all scored 65.
If Tiger Woods wins this year’s Doral CA Championship, it would be the fourth time he won the said event in five years.
What makes this a far fetched idea for the great Tiger Woods is that he still has little rust after suffering a PGA season ending injury last year. It was highly uncharacteristic of Tiger Woods to have a stat sheet that says he was 1 out of 11 in his putts that had atleast a 10 feet distance to the hole. However just to note the play Tiger Woods had, he scored three birdies while only getting two bogeys.
“I was just a touch off, either driving the ball just through the fairways or not hitting it close enough or lipping out,” Tiger Woods said “Just one of those days. It’s not like I was playing poorly or struggling all the way around or struggling on the greens, not having my speed. I had all that, I felt good all day. It’s just a matter of getting the ball in a little bit faster.”
Even if Tiger Woods…
Terrell Owens to play for Buffalo Bills
Thursday, March 12th, 2009
The city of Buffalo found a way to make people talk about their team.
In case you didn’t know, Terrell Owens will be playing for the Buffalo Bills once the 2009 NFL football season gets here. It was only a matter of time before the Cowboys released Owens after he just kept on going at it with Cowboys team leaders, Tony Romo and Jason Witten, Buffalo gives T.O. a new start and for now, he’s quite happy about it.
‘’I’m leaving America’s team (for) North America’s team,’’ Terrell Owens said at a news conference. ‘’This may not be the most ideal place for a lot of people, but I’m the guy. I beat to my own beat sometimes, my own thinking, my own intuition.’’
Contrary to what he said, the Dallas Cowboys left him, not the other way around. And I’m not surprised to hear T.O. say ‘’me’’ again only days after signing with the team.
While his prior stints in Dallas, Philadelphia and San Francisco all ended badly, Owens is a major upgrade for a Buffalo Bills team seeking more offensive firepower, statistically speaking. Buffalo was already rebuffed earlier this offseason in attempts to sign wide receiver Laveranues Coles and running backs Fred Taylor and Kevin Jones. With the singing of T.O., the Bills will now have two deep threats with Lee Evans coming off one of his best seasons in his career. The question is, can the Bills co-exist with Owens in Buffalo.
Owens is among the NFL’s career leaders in catches, yards and touchdowns. Despite that. the Cowboys became the third team to get rid of him because of his divisiveness. He left after eight seasons with the 49ers and two with the Eagles.
Despite that, there were still teams willing to sign him after he was released by Dallas, the Raiders and the Redskins, among other teams, were initially interested in him. In the end, the controversial wideout…
Alex Rodriguez will miss 6 – 9 weeks
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees undergoes hip surgery which would put him out for atleast 6 – 9 weeks in the opening of the Major League Baseball Regular Season.
Alex Rodriguez who is by far the highest paid professional Major League Baseball player would start the MLB Regular Season on the wrong foot and baseball fans hope that the sting of woes the Baseball star has been in would end.
In the past few months, Alex Rodriguez has admitted to the use of performance enhancing drugs that generated criticism in the ranks of Baseball fans. The 33 year old New York Yankee is yet to redeem his name in the hearts of millions of Baseball fans across America. The untimely surgery that was to repair a torn labrum in his right hip comes at an ever graver time for the 3 time American League MVP. Despite the optimism from his teammates, Alex Rodriguez is still a great part of another championship run the New York Yankees are trying to sum up for this year.
“I feel like this team is going to win if we pitch well, whether Alex is here or not, to tell you the truth,” Andy Pettitte said. “Everybody’s lineup is so good. It’s tough to pitch in this division. I think we’re going to win because, hopefully, we outpitch the other people.”
Alex Rodriguez has…
Butler v Cleveland State on Tuesday
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
The Butler Bulldogs, you may not hear much about them but as of press time, they are ranked no.17 in the nation.
Of course, like other bracket-bound teams, the Bulldogs can use all sorts of momentum heading to the 2009 March Madness bracket tournament. Thankfully, they have Gordon Howard to make things easier for them.
Gordon Hayward is a top candidate for Horizon League player of the year. All seven of the 6-foot-8 freshman swingman’s best games had him scoring 19 or more points, ironically, all of them have come on the road, including a career-best 27 points in the Bulldogs’ 75-63 victory at Davidson.
He is shooting 52.5 percent from 3-point distance and 85.9 percent at the free-throw line in 14 road games. Hayward said he enjoys playing in hostile environments like Davidson’s sold-out Belk Arena, which holds 5,223. The Butler Bulldogs improved to 11-3 on the road with their 75-63 victory at Davidson. No team in Division I has more road wins.
The last time the Bulldogs met up with the Cleveland State Vikings, Butler edged Cleveland State 50-48 on Dec. 4 on a 3-pointer by Zach Hahn with one second remaining, capping a wild finish that featured three lead changes in the last 19 seconds. The Bulldogs shot 31.5 percent from the field, but that was better than the Vikings at 25.9 percent. Cleveland State made just one of 11 3-pointers.
After the Vikings’ seven-game winning streak was finally snapped, expect them to bounce back against the Bulldogs. The Vikings entered the week in third place in the Horizon League with two games left. They were two games behind Butler and one behind…
