2009 NBA Playoff Race Heats Up
Friday, February 27th, 2009
We are less than a couple of months from the postseason.
You read it, and that only means one thing, the 2009 NBA basketball season will just get interesting from here. Unless of course, if you’re a Piston fan like myself.
The second half of the season has already started and we have quite a handful of teams moving up and down the proverbial food chain. One of which is the Detroit Pistons.
The Pistons clearly has some
serious problems, no matter how much the team (including their fans…) deny it or not. Detroit suffered the consequences of trading Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson, thinking that the young Rodney Stuckey was already ready to step in for Mr. Big Shot.
Enngggrrrkkk… WRONG! A lot of people thought the Allen Iverson deal was the move that could put the Pistons over the hump. After three straight losses in the Eastern Conference finals, losing to Miami, Cleveland and Boston in three straight years, Joe Dumars felt that the move will finally bring Detroit back in the NBA Finals and change the makeup of the team for the better.
The makeup did change, but it wasn’t anything better. From being one of the powerhouse teams in the East, the Pistons are just hovering above the .500 mark with Rodney Stuckey and Allen Iverson running the backcourt. All that is left for this team is hope that teams in the 9, 10, 11 spots won’t be talented enough to overtake them.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, on the other hand, is a team surging in the East. With the injury to Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett, it seems…
Memphis Tigers visit UAB Blazers
Thursday, February 26th, 2009
People say the Blazers are the only real challengers to Memphis in the C-USA. On Thursday, they will have the chance to prove it.
Yes people, the countdown to the 2009 March Madness bracket tournament continues with another huge game on Thursday night between the fourth best team in the nation, Memphis, against the only team who has the Tigers’ number, UAB.
You read it, the Memphis Tigers are
going up against the UAB Blazers again with a chance to further climb up the proverbial ladder before the brackets arrive. Memphis is currently ranked No.4 overall and since they lost to UAB two years ago, they’ve won an astounding 54 league games in a row. They also cruise down Highway 78 on an 18-game overall win streak.
Of course, another loss to the UAB Blazers will halt what has been the Tigers’ march for March. And coming to their big game against Memphis this Thursday night, the Blazers also have, although modest, winning streak of their own, having won six games in a row.
One thing going for UAB on gamenight is the fact that they have simply been phenomenal at Bartow. They are a perfect 12-0 at home this 2008-09 NCAA college basketball season and you can bet your ass that their home fans will be pumped for this one.
If you’re betting on Memphis, then you should know that the Tigers won their first meeting, 81-68, at the FedEx Forum. Although UAB has won nine of their last ten games since, the Tigers should still have the upper hand, that is if they can keep their…
Gilbert Arenas could play in the remainder of the NBA Regular Season
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards, who has been sidelined from the start of the 2008 – 2009 NBA Regular Season has been practicing full time with the team after getting knee surgery in the summer.
The participation time of Gilbert Arenas with the Washington Wizards was kept under the radar up until Gilbert Arenas himself put the news out earlier this week when he was interviewed.
“I’m out there feeling like the old Gilbert Arenas again.” Gilbert Arenas said “I’m running, jumping, dunking, feeling good. No pain, no swelling, My balance is back, my speed is back. The only thing I have to get used to again is being around other bodies out there on the court. I’m working on getting timing back. The only thing I’m not doing is playing in games.”
Washington Wizard team spokesman Scott Hall confirmed that Gilbert Arenas has already began practice sessions with the Washington Wizards last week, after the NBA All Star weekend Gilbert Arenas has progressively increased his practice hours ever since. Washington Wizards interim coach Ed Tapscott also said early this week that Gilbert Arenas had already started to have some shooting and some running up and down the court during practice sessions.
Gilbert Arenas has been…
Tiger Woods returns Wednesday
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009
He’s baaack.
Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played a single golf tournament since his dramatic U.S. Open win last June, said he would return to the links this week to tee it up in the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Woods has been sidelined since he won his 14th major at Torrey Pines. Just days after the tense playoff victory over Rocco Mediate, the world’s top golfer announced he would undergo season-ending knee surgery. As a result, he missed the year’s final two majors, the Open Championship and the PGA, along with the Ryder Cup.
More than eight months after Woods winced and wobbled on one good leg to win the U.S. Open, the world’s No.1 golfer said his reconstructed left knee and his game were in good enough shape to compete.
He signed up for the 2009 Accenture Match Play Championship, which begins Wednesday just outside Tucson, Ariz., and where Woods will hit his first real shot in 253 days.
The return of Woods was welcomed by the PGA Tour, which has seen television ratings plummet in his absence. Even the players, whom Woods has routinely beaten while compiling 65 victories, began skipping events as well.
In the eight months that Woods has been gone, Padraig Harrington won two majors, the Americans won the Ryder Cup and Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup. But with a mainstream audience, golf lost relevance without Woods.
Woods has not been seen inside the…
Teams to bet on for March Madness 09
Monday, February 23rd, 2009
Since we are less than a month away from March, it’s only fitting to find out which teams are ruling college hoops right now.
Why? Well, in case you didn’t know, the month of March only means one thing to college basketball, the March Madness bracket tournament and since the 2008-09 NCAA college basketball season is nearing it’s own version of the playoffs, it’s about time for you to have an idea on which team to bet on.
And as far as the No.1 spot is concerned, the Connecticut Huskies still own the top spot. The Huskies beat the Louisville Cardinals and the Michigan Wolverines last week to earn the title ‘’top dawg.’’ These guys certainly look good heading towards March.
The Oklahoma Sooners and the North Carolina Tar Heels hold second and third place respectively. The Sooners got three first-place votes while the Tar Heels were No.1 on two ballots.
The run for No.1 started when Pittsburgh finished its two-week stint on top. Wake Forest and Duke each were up there for a week before Connecticut moved in. The changes in the Top 25 started following a week that saw 14 teams, six in the top 10, lose at least one game.
Pittsburgh jumped from sixth to No.4, while Louisville remained fifth after rebounding from a home the loss to Connecticut with a road win over St. John’s.
The Duke Blue Devils, which lost by 27 points to Clemson then beat Miami in overtime, dropped from fourth to sixth. Wake Forest, which lost by 27 points to Miami before snapping a two-game losing streak with a win over Boston College, held seventh place.
The Memphis Tigers, who beat Gonzaga in a matchup of ranked teams, moved from 14th to eighth, while Michigan State moved from 13th to No.9. Marquette, which fell to South Florida for its first Big East loss, dropped two spots to 10th.
The UCLA Bruins were at No.11, followed by…
