WTA Tennis Betting Tips on the 2009 Australian Open

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Maria Sharapova WTA TennisJelena Jankovic one of only six women to hold the No. 1 ranking last season, has finally received a top seed ranking in one of the year’s first Grand Slam. Along side is the American who is a three-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams ranked second.

This year could be an interesting year in the WTA as the Williams sisters have declined significantly with their game making this a free fall all season. Maria Sharapova as well has declined giving opportunities to most of the other women in the WTA to finally have their crack in numerous Grand Slams this 2009.

Russia’s Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva, the 2009 Beijing Olympic finalists, were seeded third and fourth, respectively, right behind Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams. Elena Dementieva who by far can match the power brought on the table by both the Williams sisters can post possible match up problems for about any WTA Player available and most importantly give Serena Williams and Venus Williams a great run for their money.

The 2009 Australian Open runner-up Ana Ivanovic is the fifth seed and one of the six WTA players to be seeded No. 1 last season while 2008 Wimbledon champion Venus Williams is ranked at sixth.

The defending champion Maria Sharapova has been…

Who’ll advance to Super Bowl XLIII?

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Only four teams remain, two of them will earn the trip to Tampa this weekend.

As opposed to the wild card round, where we saw all the road teams as favorites, last weekend’s divisional playoff round of the 2009 NFL playoffs set up with all four home teams laying the points. But, as bettors who played the favorites found out, sometimes it’s best to take the path less traveled, or at least it was this past Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend’s biggest underdog, the Arizona Cardinals, played those 9.5-point favorite Panthers in Carolina last Saturday night. The Panthers were almost always favored by as many points all year that betting against them was hard, to say the least. The Cards were champions of arguably the NFL’s weakest division, the NFC West, with a 9-7 record straight up, while the Panthers won the NFC South with a 12-4 mark SU.

Hines WardFortunately for Arizona bettors, and unfortunately for Carolina’s, Panthers’ birthday boy Jake Delhomme threw five picks in an awful performance. The resulting 33-13 loss dealt a blow to the betting public, as the Panthers were heavily backed to cover the spread, but as well the straight up loss killed a lot of teaser and moneyline parlay tickets Saturday.

Arizona is now 6-1 ATS when underdogs of 8-points or more and advances to its first ever NFC championship. Who knows, that trend might come in handy if the Cards meet Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLIII, though the line probably wouldn’t get that high.

The Cardinals have the Philadelphia Eagles next after Philly sent the Giants to an early vacation. Remember that quarterback controversy in Philadelphia earlier in the season, when Donovan McNabb was benched in favor of Kevin Kolb? Remember how the New York Giants won the Super Bowl last year?

Both are distant memories now as the Philadelphia Eagles ensured that the Giants won’t be defending their Super Bowl title, covering as +4 road favorite in a 23-11 win last Sunday.

The Under had cashed in 10 of Philadelphia’s…

Ravens in Super Bowl XLIII?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

The Ravens are only a win away from earning the trip to the big dance people.

Thanks to Matt Stover and his 43-yard field goal with 53 seconds left, the Baltimore Ravens earned an improbable 13-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans to stun another sellout crowd at LP Field.Inspired by a timely offense, a stubborn defense and a rare break by the officials, the Ravens became just the second No.6 seed in NFL playoff history to upset a top seed.

The Ravens will now play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2009 AFC championship with a spot to Super Bowl XLIII at stake. This is the first time Baltimore advanced to the AFC title game in eight years.

Ray LewisA 48-yard touchdown pass from Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco to Derrick Mason tied the score at 7 before the 23-yarder from Flacco to Todd Heap on third down set up the game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter.Still, the win can’t deny the fact that these Ravens won with a stubborn defense.

After giving up a touchdown in the first quarter, the Ravens allowed the Tennessee Titans to get inside their 40-yard line six more times. These Ravens won with some help from the officials too. In a season in which it seemed as if they never got a break from the officiating crew, the Ravens got a big one in the AFC divisional round. It happened right before Flacco’s 23-yard pass to Heap on the game-winning drive when it was clear that the play clock has already expired before the undrafted rookie QB even had the chance to start the play.

Still, beating the top-seeded Tennessee Titans brought the Ravens to a situation they’ve already been before.

In the 2000 season, the Ravens beat the Titans despite being out-gained 317-134 in total yards and 23-6 in first downs. Today, the Ravens won despite being out-gained 391-211 in total yards and 21-9 in first downs. The difference between…

Boxing Betting Preview on Manny Pacquiao versus Ricky Hatton

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Manny Pacquiao Oscar De La HoyaAfter a drubbing of the “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao said that he wanted to fight at 140 lbs or the junior welterweight division. That is the realm of Ricky Hatton and that seems to be exactly where Manny Pacquiao is going to next. The fight is close to being finalized and will take place on May 2nd in Las Vegas. This fight was a logical step for both boxers as it is no surprise that things are coming along smoothly due to the fact. In beating Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao also grabbed the chance to fight on Cinco De Mayo Weekend, a spot usually reserved for the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya.

The fight is an explosive matchup nonetheless for Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao proved that he is the best boxer in the world pound for pound last December 6, 2008 but Ricky Hatton will be a ferocious opponent that has no intent on stopping his attacks. Manny Pacquiao is expected to win, however Ricky Hatton will be very competitive and would not surrender on his stool like Oscar De La Hoya.

The winner of the slated boxing match between…

NBA Basketball Betting Odds the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Houston Rockets

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Kobe Bryant Los Angeles LakersThe Los Angeles Lakers showed in their previews NBA basketball game that they do not need Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol to shoot a high percentage to win. Superb outputs from Kobe Bryant and Pao Gasol are a great addition if the Los Angeles Lakers can pull it off against the Houston Rockets that appear to have bounced back from a recent slump despite loosing Tracy McGrady yet again for a few games. The Los Lakers hope for better numbers and considerable outputs from Kobe Bryant and Pao Gasol as the Los Angeles Lakers go for their 10th win in 11 games come Tuesday night in a NBA matchup with the Houston Rockets who have won already 3 straight basketball games.

The Los Angeles Lakers are leading the whole NBA in the rankings department and made sure last Sunday by finishing with 26 total team assists on 37 field goals, making the whole league see the depth of a team that is a favourite to be in the 2010 NBA Finals. Andrew Bynum led the Los Angeles Lakers with 24 points and Vladimir Radmanovic added 18 points in one of his better games this NBA Regular Season. Kobe Bryant will try to keep the Los Angeles Lakers in check against the Houston Rockets that have won three straight games since losing six of eight. The Houston Rockets who are 24-15 have held one of the NBA’s high scoring…
