Antonio Margarito and the “Faulty” Wraps

Friday, January 30th, 2009

The reports of Naazim Richardson cathing Antonio Margarito’s alleged “irregular” hand wraps prior to the Sugar Shane Mosley fight, it is not hard to take a look back in history in Billy Collins Jr. who was a victim of one of the ugliest episodes in boxing history. In 1983 after Billy Collins Jr. [...]

Arizona will win Super Bowl XLIII

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Because the Cardinals’ coaching staff WERE coaching the Steelers to win Super Bowl XL three years ago, giving them the edge this Sunday.

Isn’t that ironic? Who knew that the same coaching staff who helped the Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks for the Super Bowl would be able to return to the big dance and face this year’s Steelers at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida?

You read it, in an Anquan Boldinodd little twist, Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt has his roots with the Pittsburgh Steelers, serving as offensive coordinator of the team from 2004 to 2006, including the year when he helped a second-year quarterback named Ben Roethlisberger win his first Super Bowl championship ring.

He was expected to get the head coaching job the Pittsburgh Steelers had vacant when Bill Cowher stepped down two seasons ago. So was another Steelers coach, Russ Grimm, now Whisenhunt’s right-hand man in Arizona. Instead, the job went to Mike Tomlin, who returns to Tampa, the city where he began his coaching career.

The city-wide celebration set off by that clinching touchdown three years ago provided the frame of reference for many Steelers players who were asked about the irony of seeing Ken Whisenhunt coach the opposing team in Tampa. He may coach the Cardinals now, but to some Pittsburgh veterans, Whisenhunt always will be a Steeler and one of the first guys they will look for in any reunion of the 2006 Super Bowl champions.

‘’It’s going to be emotional for us,’’ Steelers left tackle Max Starks said. ‘’Those are the coaches I won my last Super Bowl with. It’s going to be old school versus new school.’’The faculty of the…

Pittsburgh -7 favorites to beat Arizona

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I can’t blame these Vegas bookies why they like the Steelers.

In case you missed the conference championship games two weeks ago, the road to Super Bowl XLIII is done and we have the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals left standing to play for the biggest prize in North American sports.

You read it, for the second time in four years, the Pittsburgh Steelers will once again play for the Super Bowl and face the Arizona Cardinals, a team making their first trip to the big dance in franchise history.

The Pittsburgh Ben RoethlisbergerSteelers have been one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl even before this season started and it is quite understandable that Las Vegas oddsmakers are already favoring those guys by as much as 7 points.

The Arizona Cardinals, on the other hand, were already longshots right from the get-go and they have their track record to thank for that. They were 45-1 longshots at the start of the season and were still 40-1 underdogs to win the Super Bowl even after they got the invite to play in the postseason.

It seems the Cardinals are not getting the respect from oddsmakers despite proving those guys wrong for three consecutive weeks. One oddsmaker said more favor the Steelers because a win over the Ravens beats a win over the Eagles.

‘’Beating Baltimore is a little more impressive,’’ oddsmaker Jason Been said.

Although I don’t entirely disagree with that one, what about beating the Falcons and the Panthers BEFORE beating Philly? Is that less of an accomplishment compared to coming up with a win over a Chargers team playing without…
