The Detroit Pistons have greater chances of garnering the top spot in the East. When the Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat met to open the NBA regular season in November, both teams felt they had a chance of representing the Eastern Conference in the NBA finals. Now, only one of them is still harboring those hopes, and that goes to the Detroit Pistons.

The Central division leading team Detroit Pistons finished off the lowly Miami Heat, 100-95, at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Despite being emotionally down because of their team mate Shaquille O’Neal’s trade to the Phoenix Sun for NBA All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, the Heat managed to take the lead in the first quarter. The Miami Heat even outscored the Detroit Pistons in the first and fourth quarters, but the game turned in the third when the Pistons pulled away with a 27-16 advantage. Despite trailing by 11, the short-handed Heat did not give up. Shooting guard Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups made enough free throws on the next three possessions to seal the win for the Detroit Pistons.

The Detroit Pistons had been winning with solid defense and ranked 2nd in the league. The Pistons has won 16 of its 20 games against the Miami Heat. The Pistons have won 6th straight games advancing their NBA record to 35-13 SU and 28-28-1 ATS. The Miami Heat is the league’s 2nd-worst road offense and the 4th worst road record. Miami Heat, the NBA’s only team without 10 wins, has lost five in a row and 20 of 21 and their NBA record dropped to 9-39 SU and 16-30-1 ATS.

The Detroit Pistons may have won the game, but the point margin at the end of the game was not enough to cover the -15.5 point difference, making the Miami Heat the ATS winners.

The Detroit Pistons was led by the double-double, 26 points and 10 assists of forward-center Rasheed Wallace. Shooting guard Richard Hamilton had 19 points while point guard Chauncey Billups had a double-double 15 points and 10 assists, and power forward Antonio McDyess had his double-double 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons.

Dwyane Wade
, despite feeling low for losing a valuable teammate and friend, led the way for the Miami Heat with his double-double 30 points and 12 assists. Reserve forward Ricky Davis had 20 points off the bench. Center Mark Blount and guard-forward Dorell Wright added 14 points a piece.

The Central Division top team Pistons will put their win streak on the line against guard Brandon Roy and the Portland Trailblazers on February 8, before hosting forward-center Emeka Okafor and the Charlotte Bobcats on February 10.

The Miami Heat will hope to up their NBA record with new teammates Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, on February 7 when they visit point guard Andre Miller and another top team Philadelphia 76ers. On February 10, the Heat will host NBA All-Star shooting guard Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
