2008 NFL Season Week 10 Betting Tips

Time to cash in on some games in the NFL.

Week 10 of the 2008-09 NFL football season started early this week because starting this week, football comes early every Thursday night until the second to the last week of the season.

And in case you missed the first paragraph, YES, Week 10 started on a Thursday night with the Denver Broncos visiting the Cleveland Browns. These two teams have been struggling lately and matching them up together last Thursday was just what both of these two teams needed.

Adrian PetersonNext, the St. Louis Rams will try to regain some momentum after giving their new coach a couple of wins only to lose the next two games when they face the New York Jets. Having won two of three games under coach Jim Haslett, another victory would have given the St. Louis Rams a 3-5 record last Sunday at the season’s halfway point and moved them to within one game of the Arizona Cardinals. Instead, they have fallen three games behind Arizona after the Cardinals handed them a 34-13 loss back in Week 9. They have the Jets this Sunday, a team that won two straight to put them in the middle of a three-way tie for first in the AFC East. And in case you didn’t get that, yes, this is a bad time for a struggling Rams team to face the high-flying Jets.

New York Jets by seven.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have their worst record in franchise history after eight games at 3-5. Fortunately for these guys, they will play the STILL winless Detroit Lions this Sunday and there’s no way in hell the Jags will drop this one. The Jaguars are the first team in NFL history to play back-to-back games against teams with 0-8 records, but after losing to the once winless Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, giving the winless Lions their first win of the season shouldn’t be included in their itinerary come gameday.

Jacksonville Jaguars by seven.

The Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots will be looking to have a win this Sunday after suffering defeats the last time they were on the field. And while the Pats continue to fix their problems at the QB position, the Bills have a bigger one with their entire offensive line. The Bills have one of the the tallest and heaviest lines in the NFL but for some reason, it has been overmatched in recent weeks. Left tackle Jason Peters, a Pro Bowler last season, can’t seem to block anyone this season while right tackle Langston Walker and left guard Derrick Dockery, the two big-ticket free agents who signed last year, have not performed very well this season either.

A team’s offense starts with the offensive line and since the Bills are having their problems with it, we’re picking the New England Patriots by three.

The Seattle Seahawks, at 2-6, will have to bounce back from their poor play when they clash with the 4-4 Miami Dolphins this Sunday. Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (surprise surprise…) is not likely to play against the Dolphins. The bulging disc in his back has been keeping him sidelined for weeks now and it’s much of the same this week. And while the Seahawks continue to deal with injuries, the Dolphins have been winning two straight games to put them merely a game behind the three-way tie going on right now for the AFC East lead. The Dolphins defeated the Bills and the Broncos, two division leaders, to help them erect a 4-4 mark. That’s the first time the Dolphins knocked off two division leaders in a row in their 43-year history.

Yes, surprisingly, we’re picking the Miami Dolphins by three.

The Chicago Bears will face their toughest opponent on Sunday when they play the undefeated Tennessee Titans. Will Kyle Orton be available for Chicago then? The Bears already know the extent of Kyle Orton’s injury but they have no intention of providing any update whatsoever. I can’t blame them too. If you’re about to play a team yet to taste defeat, you shouldn’t be giving out any information on your team that might give the team your playing an advantage.

Advantage or no advantage, we’re sticking with perfection. Tennessee Titans by seven.

The 6-2 Carolina Panthers will look to win their third straight game when they face the struggling Oakland Raiders this Sunday. The Panthers look to start the second half the same way they ended the first, aiming for a third straight victory Sunday in a road matchup against the lowly Oakland Raiders. The 2-6 Raiders have not been executing well, getting outscored 100-29 in four games since Al Davis fired coach Lane Kiffin in favor of offensive line coach Tom Cable. In another personnel shakeup, the Raiders cut ties with former Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Wednesday, waiving him less than eight months he was acquired from Atlanta and given a $70 million contract.

Everything’s going down hill in Oakland. That’s why we’re picking the Carolina Panthers by seven.

The San Diego Chargers have been struggling lately, losing two straight games to drop them at 3-5. STILL, they know they have enough time to make a playoff run and getting a win at Kansas City where they visit the 1-7 Chiefs would be a good place to start. The Chargers, at 3-5, were expected to contend for the Super Bowl this season, but have already lost as many games as they did last year, when they advanced to the AFC championship game. Despite their struggles, the Chargers are only one game back of AFC West-leading Denver and playing the struggling Kansas City Chiefs is just what the doctor ordered.

San Diego Chargers by 14.

Both the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers are one game behind NFC North-leaders Chicago Bears at 4-4. They will resume their NFC rivalry when they play at the Metrodome this Sunday. And while their ‘’other’’ division rival Detroit is virtually going nowhere at 0-8, it’s all up to these two teams to shake things up a bit within their division when they break their tie for second best. However, the Vikings can’t seem to take advantage of home field, losing four of their last five meetings with the Packers at the Metrodome. Green Bay has won five straight games overall against the Vikings too, which will probably clear things up a bit on which team you should put your money on.

Green Bay Packers by three.

The New Orleans Saints will again look to continue overcoming continued personnel issues when they try to go for back-to-back wins for the first time this season against the Atlanta Falcons. The 4-4 Saints entered the season expecting to compete for the division title, but a series of injuries at the skill positions contributed to the Saints’ slow start and their fall to last place in the NFC South. Top receiver Marques Colston missed five games with a thumb injury, tight end Jeremy Shockey missed three following sports hernia surgery and still isn’t at 100 percent while running back Deuce McAllister was slowed down early into the season while recovering from knee surgery. Oh yeah, add the fact that Reggie Bush could miss a few more weeks because of another injury and you have a Saints team trying to bring out the best with what they have left. Luckily, Drew Brees has become the best in the league right now inside the pocket and after their performance in London two weeks ago, there’s no reason why you should start betting against them this week.

New Orleans Saints by seven.

Next we have the Baltimore Ravens looking to win their fourth straight game of the season against the Houston Texans, a team on the verge of losing playoff contention. The Ravens are only a game behind AFC North leaders Pittsburgh Steelers and since they only have the lowly Texans tam to worry about this Sunday, cutting Pittsburgh’s lead shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Baltimore Ravens by seven.

Speaking of the Pittsburgh Steelers, they have the Indianapolis Colts visiting them at Heinz Field in a game between two Super Bowl champions. And while the Steelers are sitting comfortably atop the AFC North with a 6-2 mark, the Colts are hanging on by just a thread at 4-4. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, the Colts may have finally woken up against the Patriots last week and with Joseph Addai now back for Indianapolis, things are not looking as good for the Steelers, who could be without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on gameday.

Indianapolis Colts by three.

And concluding this Sunday’s games will be Sunday Night Football and this week, we have two teams from the best division in football, the NFC East, looking to further pad their lead over the struggling Cowboys.

The New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles collide on Sunday night in what should be a good one. The Giants are looking to prove that they are clearly the class of the NFC. They will play NFC East rivals Philadelphia in what could be the game to watch this week. A road win over a surging Eagles squad on Sunday night would further eliminate any doubts that the Giants are clearly one of the favorites to win it all in Tampa. And as long as the Giants have that ridiculously talented defense, I don’t see any reason why Philly may pull off an upset.

New York Giants by three.

And of course, the football week concludes with Monday Night Football. This week though, the NFL’s prized primetime extravaganza will feature a ho-hum game between a team trying to stay on top of a fucked up division and a club trying to keep whatever fans they have left by not fucking things up that much every single week they take the field.

The 5-3 Arizona Cardinals and the 2-6 San Francisco 49ers resume their NFC West rivalry on Monday night. And since the NFC West is one of the worst divisions in football, the only team worth writing about here is Arizona since they are the only team within their division playing above the .500 mark. Pathetic huh? Arizona won its last two games last season to finish 8-8 under first-year coach Ken Whisenhunt, while San Francisco went 3-3 down the stretch en route to a 5-11 record. Both teams showed progress, and were expected to improve in 2008. Guess what, they haven’t showed much of it this season.

We’re still picking the Arizona Cardinals by three though just because Anquan Boldin is still having one heckuva’ season.
