Can Colts stop Titans’ NFL Perfection?
Monday, October 27th, 2008
Can the Titans continue their perfect run against the Colts on Monday Night Football?.
At 6-0, the Tennessee Titans are flirting with perfection this 2008-09 NFL football season. The problem is, other teams have flirted with it in the past and failed miserably.
The team nearest to accomplish the feat was New England and yes, that team was also the one that failed most miserably when they lost the Super Bowl to a Giants team that dropped its first five games of that season. At 6-0, the Tennessee Titans have a shot, but as we all know, it only gets tougher each week.
Looking back, the 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only NFL team to have a ‘’perfect season’’ and win the Super Bowl, following the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Their undefeated campaign was led by Don Shula and notable teammates Bob Griese, Earl Morrall, and Larry Csonka among many others.
This team went 14-0 in the regular season prior to the extension of the regular season by the NFL, and won all three playoff games, including Super Bowl VII against the Washington Redskins, for an undefeated record of 17-0.
This remarkable feat can be done with the right players on the team. With the New England Patriots last season, the first half of that year was on the Pats’ side, but it all slipped away when their defensive line faltered through the second half of the season.
Perfection is all about mentality, who wants it more, while not letting it get too much in your head, or too far away to make it a reality.
For the 1972 Miami Dolphins, they had the right players that fit their system. Players on the ground during that time were running backs Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris, becoming the first teammates to each rush for 1,000 yards in a…
Oklahoma Sooners visit Kansas State
Friday, October 24th, 2008
BOOMER SOONER. Oklahoma resumes their quest for the title this Saturday.
Week 9 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues as the Kansas State Wildcats host the visiting Boomer Sooner offense from Oklahoma.
Ranked No.4 in the nation, the Oklahoma Sooners look to continue their quest for their seventh Big 12 South crown in nine years when they visit Kansas State.
The annual rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas usually goes a long way towards determining the champion of the Big 12 South. Oklahoma did its part to remain in the hunt last Saturday.
A win over the Kansas State Wildcats this Saturday will get the Sooners closer to their ultimate goal.
Sam Bradford may be the biggest key to the Sooners’ title chances as the sophomore ranks third in the FBS with 2,520 passing yards, second with 26 touchdowns and fifth with a 71.4 completion percentage.
Sam Bradford hopes to continue his success in his first career game against Kansas State. The Wildcats (4-3, 1-2) were held to a season-low point total in a 14-13 defeat at Colorado last Saturday.
They are averaging 23.3 points in their three losses compared to 50.8 in four wins.
Oklahoma has won five of its last six meetings with Kansas State to take a 68-17-4 advantage in the all-time series.
Kansas State’s last win in the series was…
Shaquille O’Neal still hates the Spurs
Monday, October 20th, 2008
Apparently, Shaq has this grudge with the Spurs.
The 2008-09 NBA basketball season is almost here and Shaquille O’Neal is still irritated of the San Antonio Spurs for forcing him make his free throws.
Yes, the former Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and now, Phoenix Suns center of attraction, Shaquille O’Neal, is not a fan of being forced to the foul line to shoot 15 feet away from the hoop with the infamous Hack-a-Shaq strategy teams have started to use against him.
Specifically speaking, Shaq wasn’t a fan of the strategy the San Antonio Spurs used against him in last season’s playoffs where he had the Phoenix Suns leading handily only to hand the lead back to San Antonio after the Spurs intentionally fouled him each time they get.
That was more than a few months ago and apparently, the Phoenix Suns center is still fuming about it.
‘’The only thing I call cowardly is when you’re up by 10 and do it,’’ Shaquille O’Neal said. ‘’That’s a coward move and [Spurs coach Gregg Popovich] knows that and I’ll make them pay for it.’’
‘’I just have to go to the line and hit them and make them pay, and I will, I’m not worried.’’
Shaq has been a notoriously poor free-throw shooter throughout his career, and the Hack-a-Shaq strategy exposes his weaknesses best. Shaq thinks the strategy makes the game less appealing to fans although I find it quite amusing really.
O’Neal shot 50 percent from the charity stripe last season. That number goes…
Texas Longhorns top BCS Rankings
Thursday, October 16th, 2008
The BCS rankings continue to shuffle and this week, it’s no different.
Yes, the revolving door of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues to move as far as the BCS rankings system is concerned and it is no surprise that we have a new No.1 team in the nation this week.
The Texas Longhorns are the new No.1 team in college football after beating the Oklahoma Sooners 45-35. The Longhorns’ ascend to No.1 is the fastest in college football history since Miami went from sixth to first back in Aug.29, 1988, after beating top-ranked Florida State 31-0 to start their campaign.
The Longhorns received 39 first-place votes and 1,599 points from the media panel. The Alabama Crimson Tide received the other 36 first-place votes and 1,582 points. The Longhorns became the fourth team this season to be ranked No.1, following Georgia, Southern California and Oklahoma. It’s last season all over again that had four No.1 teams and eight different teams ranked second.
And for the second time this season, three of the top four teams in the country lost on the same weekend. While the losses by the previously top-ranked Sooners, Missouri and the LSU Tigers were already stunning, what it did on the BCS rankings was something harder to fathom.
Unbeaten Penn State Nittany Lions moved up three spots to No.3 while the Oklahoma Sooners dropped three spots to No.4 after suffering their first loss of the season. The Florida Gators gained six spots to No.5 after pounding LSU 51-21 last Saturday night.
The No.6 USC Trojans are followed by Big 12 rivals…
Hot ALCS, NLCS wars in MLB Playoffs
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008
The Rays tie the Red Sox 1-1 while the Dodgers cut ito the Phillies lead 2-1.
That’s where it’s at folks as the 2008 MLB playoffs just got interesting after the two teams trailing in the two best-of-seven championship series wars were able to win one to make the final two wars before the World Series a little more competitive.
First, let’s start with the ALCS where the Tampa Bay Rays won what has been a shootout in Tampa. B.J. Upton helped his team beat the Red Sox 9-8 last Saturday with a shallow fly ball to tie the AL championship series at one game apiece.
The Boston Red Sox were coming in Tampa looking to take the early 2-0 lead. They never anticipated that the Rays will put up a fight nobody probably anticipated. The Red Sox and the Rays combined for seven home runs, tying a postseason record. And after 1:30 a.m., the Rays won a game that lasted five hours, 27 minutes when Perez beat right fielder J.D. Drew’s throw home.
The series shifts to Fenway Park for Game 3 Monday, with left-hander Jon Lester pitching for Boston against the Rays’ Matt Garza.
In the NLCS, the Los Angeles Dodgers came out early and finished of the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 to get back into the series, trimming Philly’s lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven championship series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers started strong courtesy of Blake DeWitt’s bases-loaded triple off Jamie Moyer, to finish a five-run first inning. There were no punches or ejections this time as both teams played with poise all night.
Kuroda pitched effectively into the seventh for Los Angeles, which will…
