Valencia, Real Madrid set sights on Spanish League and Champions League title
With identical records in La Liga, Real Madrid and Valencia are tied for third position and fighting for a leg up to qualify for the Champions League in 2007-2008.
Though conceding most of the headlines to Barcelona and Sevilla as of late, both Madrid and Valencia still have their sights set on the Spanish League title, as well as a Champions League crown.
With a regular season showdown looming in April, and a potential Champions League clash on the horizon, these two clubs have a lot to focus on in weeks to come.
The win vs. Barca was no doubt important; Madrid and Sevilla drew their respective matches in league play, keeping things tight at the top. But the victory may be misleading, and Valencia
need to win Saturday’s fixture against Celta Vigo in order to avoid being shaken.
Primera Liga odds favor Valencia to do just that. Look for Joaquin to open things up in midfield, creating some chances amidst a worn-down Celta defence.
Real Madrid square off Sunday with the pesky Getafe side, which neither Barca nor Sevilla have been able to beat this campaign. Madrid also lost 1-0 at Getafe’s Coliseum early on, but are a much stronger side now.
Madrid will also have their eye on Saturday’s important clash between Barca and Sevilla. Because of this, a victory over Getafe would be that much more important.
And how can we neglect the following week, where Madrid will travel to Munich for the second leg of Champions League knockout stage against Bayern Munich. A 3-2 victory in the first leg leaves things up in the air, and Madrid will do whatever they can to avoid another disappointing Champions League run.
A recent four-goal performance by the Dutchman Ruud Van Nistelrooy has him primed for the most crucial stretch of the year for Madrid; look for him to keep it going.
