UCLA Bruins lose in shocking upset to 15-point underdog Cal Bears
A .500 team coming off its lowest output in nearly two decades enters postseason play and knocks off the No. 3 team in the country? Welcome to March Madness, sports fans.
The Cal Golden Bears, behind 29 points from some dude whose name sounds like a Star Wars character, sl
apped the UCLA Bruins a 76-69 overtime loss in the second round of the Pac-10 tournament on Thursday.
The Bruins couldn’t even complain about road woes, because the game was played at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The stunning upset was the Bruins’ second straight following a regular season-ending loss at Washington. Pac-10 player of the year Arron Afflalo managed only three points.
A 15-point underdog, Cal moved on to Friday’s semifinals while the Bruins (26-5 overall, 15-4 Pac-10) will wait until Selection Sunday to see how badly the loss hurts their seeding in the NCAA Tournament.
Cal, meanwhile, will look to make a miracle run to join the field of 65. The Golden Bears (16-16, 6-12) need to win the tournament to have a hope of advancing deeper into March Madness.
Ayinde Ubaka scored eight of his 29 points in overtime to propel the upset. In a 42-41 loss to Arizona State on Saturday, the Bears recorded their lowest point total since 1988. They won on Wednesday’s opening round of the tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.
