Time for March Madness Cinderellas to break your NCAA Tournament Brackets
From Hampton and Weber State to Santa Clara and Valparaiso, the history of March Madness Cinderellas is as unique as the schools that spawn them. Did you know the Emancipation oak tree sits on campus at Hampton? Or that former US Secretary of the Treasury David M. Kennedy went to Weber State?
How about Santa Clara being the first Catholic university in California to admit both men and women? Or that movie maize magnate Orville Redenbacher bought his first popcorn plant in Valparaiso?
Chances are you’d have more to worry about if you did know any of this prior to No. 15 Hampton stunning No. 2 Iowa State in 2001, Weber State shocking UNC in 1999, Canadian kid Steve Nash stomach-punching Arizona in 1993, or Bryce Drew hitting the shot of all shots for Valpo against Ole Miss in 1998.
These little-known schools are little-known for a reason: Nobody ever pays attention to Cinderella before the ball.
While they’ve got a long way to go before they’re mentioned in the same breath as the Chicago Cubs, the Winthrop Eagles are getting close. Much like the loveable Windy City losers, Winthrop can’t seem to win the big one.
Winthrop is experienced, knows how to play in the tourney (in 2006, they lost to No. 2 Tennessee on a last-second Chris Lofton trifecta) and seems due to breakout. With so many players closing in on their last year of eligibility, the Eagles need to do something before the clock strikes midnight.
