Sugarbowl Preview: Georgia Bulldogs vs. Hawaii Warriors
Georgia Bulldogs and the Hawaii Warriors will meet in the 74th Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic at the Louisiana Superdome on New Year’s Day.
Georgia Bulldogs are ready to play with an impressive record of 10-2, 6-2 SEC is ranked No. 5 in the BCS Standings. Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt is 71-19 in seven seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, leading Georgia Bulldogs to a bowl appearance every season.
Georgia Bulldogs are on a roll with a six-game winning streak, which was capped off by a 31-17 victory at Georgia Tech on Nov. 24. Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Matthew Stafford has passed for 2,348 yards and 18 touchdowns. Georgia Bulldogs Freshman running back Knowshon Moreno has topped the 100-yard rushing mark six times this season and has rushed for 1,273 yards and 12 touchdowns. While Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Sean Bailey leads all Bulldog players in receptions (37) and receiving yards (597) and is tied for the team lead in touchdowns (four).
Hawai’i Warriors does have an unscathed record of 12-0, 8-0 WAC, Hawai’i Warriors are ranked 10th in the BCS Standings. Hawai’i Warriors earned its first BCS bowl appearance in school history after completing the first undefeated season in school history with a 3528 victory over Washington on Dec. 1.
The Hawai’i Warriors currently hold the nation’s longest winning streak at 13 games and have won 22 of their last 23 overall. Hawai’i Warriors head coach June Jones has posted a 76-40 record in nine seasons with the Warriors. Hawai’i Warriors Senior Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Colt Brennan has passed for 4,174 yards and 38 touchdowns. Hawai’i Warriors features three players with over 1,000 receiving yards – Ryan Grice-Mullen with 1,335 yards, 12 touchdowns, Davone Bess with 1,213 yards, 12 touchdowns and Jason Rivers 1,069 yards, 13 touchdowns.
“Sugar is definitely sweet, we’re going to do it Hawaiian style.” Hawai’i Warriors quarterback Colt Brennan said.
The Georgia Bulldogs have won 13 of their last 15 contests, while Hawai’i Warriors has won 13 games in a row. With both teams’ potency on offense, this could make for one of the highest scoring games in our classic’s history.
This will be the first ever meeting between Georgia Bulldogs and Hawai’i Warriors. For Georgia, it will be its ninth appearance in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, and its third since 2003. Georgia defeated Florida State, 26-13, in the 69th Sugar Bowl. For Hawai’i, it’s their first Allstate Sugar Bowl appearance and first by a Western Athletic Conference team.
A whooping multimillion-dollar reward dwarfs Hawaii’s recruiting budget of $50,000.
“Hopefully, it means we’ll get some new carpet and new stuff in my office,” Hawai’i Warriors head coach June Jones said.
