Stanley Cup Tips: Mighty Ducks to beat Senators in six games

Thursday, May 24th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

There is no clear underdog in this year’s Stanley Cup final, which is refreshing.

Edmonton was the obvious underdog in last year’s championships series, losing to Carolina, following underdogs Calgary in 2004, AnaheDucks vs Senatorsim in 2003 and Carolina in 2002. Not that the Oilers, Flames and Ducks didn’t put a scare into their favoured opponents, before each losing in seven games.

But in reality, not since Colorado edged New Jersey in seven games in 2001 has there been a Cup final pitting two cream-of-the-crop clubs.

There’s not much to choose between Anaheim and Ottawa - two well-oiled machines who have it all to win it all.

The Ducks, who entered the NHL in 1993, have never won a Cup. The Senators have never won in the modern era. A previous Senators franchise won ten Stanley Cups, the last in 1927. That Senators team was moved to St. Louis after the 1933-34 season.

These teams haven’t played each other in more than a year and the week-long layoff before the series starts is always tough to gauge, so it’s hard to know how things will play out. But in the end, expect Anaheim’s toughness and defense to trump Ottawa’s skill.

Stanley Cup Tips: This is a toss-up series. Take the more physical Ducks on a tough call. It could go seven games.
