Roger Federer Wins Tennis Masters Cup in ShanghaiThe World No. 1 of men’s tennis Roger Federer of Switzerland claimed his fourth ATP Masters Cup title with an impressive match against David Ferrer of Spain. Roger Federer, the defending champion of the ATP Masters Cup, dominated David Ferrer, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and 38 minutes.Roger Federer not only wins the ATP Masters Cup trophy and a new Mercedes-Benz, but also leaves Shanghai with US$1.2 million in prize money, pushing his season earnings to a record US$8,630,620.

“I’m so happy,” Federer beamed. “This is the year-end tournament championship where only the best play so for me to have won this yet again is a great experience.”

David Ferrer was in awe of Roger Federer.

“Roger is the best in history. I tried to do my best. I was a bit nervous but he did it all: serve, volley, slice… I was never comfortable on the court. I don’t return badly but when Federer serves on line, I can’t do anything,” Ferrer said.

Federer entered the final as strong favorite against the sixth-ranked Ferrer after routing Andy Roddick to get into the semi-finals, and then ousting Rafael Nadal on the semi-finals on his way to the finals. Roger Federer was even on the ropes for a part in the tournament when he lost to world No. 7 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 during the round robin part of the tournament. Federer was able to bounce back with wins against Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko in order to reclaim a semi-finals berth.

Definitely, it was a long road to the ATP Masters Cup Championship, but indeed it was all well-deserved for Roger Federer. Now we know why Roger Federer is the world’s no. 1.

Roger Federer has won the Masters Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2006, losing only in the 2005 final to David Nalbandian while injured.

Meanwhile, the focus on tennis shifts to the 2007 Davis Cup, which will be contested by USA vs. Russia. USA will be looking to the likes of Andy Roddick while Russia will get support from Nikolay Davydenko.

Following the 2007 Davis Cup, the top tennis players of the world will enjoy a short break for the Christmas holidays, but will also be preparing for the upcoming 2008 Australian Open in January 2008. The 2008 Australian Open is the first grand slam tennis tournament of the year. Top tennis favorites Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer are expected to win the 2008 Australian Open.
