Premiership title race: Chelsea need John Terry to keep pressure on Manchester United

If you want a sign that Chelsea are not going to give up in the final weeks of the Premiership title race, look no further than John Terry.

The Blues skipper received a sickening blow to the head in Sunday’s Carling Cup win, temporarily losing consciousness as he swallowed his tongue before being carried from the field while being helped to breath.Chelsea desperately need to get John Terry in shape

Aside from worrying about the personal health of their leader, Terry’s teammates might have sensed any lingering title hopes they had being stretchered off the field as he departed.

There now seems no reason why Terry cannot take his place in the Chelsea side for Saturday’s trip to Portsmouth, a critical game if the Blues are to keep the pressure on Manchester United going into the final weeks of the season.

The gap is now nine points — although Chelsea have a game in hand — after Manchester United escaped with all three points from Fulham on Saturday — Cristiano Ronaldo bailing them out three minutes from time after Edwin van der Sar’s goal had come under heavy pressure from the hosts.

Chelsea appear to be doing nothing more than clinging on to hope. Given United’s vastly superior goal difference, they need to not only beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in their meeting on April 15 but also hope United drop points in at least two other games.

The chances of that seem slim. But then so did the Premiership odds on Terry being around to celebrate on Sunday night. Terry’s miraculous recovery tells us Chelsea will not go down easily.
