Novak Djokovic: Serbian Tennis Sensation
People who know a little about tennis can tell you that Swiss Roger Federer is ranked World Number 1, Spaniard Rafael Nadal is Number 2, and American Andy Roddick is Number 3. I know that, and I know a little bit more. I know about Novak Djokovic. Who? - You ask. Well, let’s just say that the Serbian standout just whooped booty on the tennis top triumvirate of Federer, Nadal and Roddick.
It all happened last weekend on the Roger’s Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal, Canada. Novak Djokovic met up with Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals of the tournament, and serving up a straight sets win against the hard-serving American (7-6 (4), 6-4). Djokovic then squared off with World Number 2 Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, and also put him away in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
“This is one of the biggest wins of my career,” Djokovic said.
Yup, that was big. But then, those headlines were quickly erased when Djokovic played a triumphant championship match against Roger Federer in a real cliff-hanger (7-6, 2-6, 7-6).
“It’s a dream come true to win such a strong as this, and to win against probably the best player ever in the sport,” Djokovic confessed.
It was Djokovic’s fourth tournament title this year, and his first win in five career watches against Roger Federer. Roger Federer, however, thinks this championship loss isn’t much of a setback to his goal of winning the US Open in New York come late August, and the ATP Masters before the year ends.
“There’s still a long way to go, and I don’t want to be disappointed with just one match,” Federer said.
As for Djokovic, he remains optimistic about his current performance, and he just hopes that this quality of tennis will extend to the upcoming US Open and the other tournaments. This Rogers Cup championship also gives Djokovic step up the world ranking, re-claiming the Number 3 spot which he got in early July but surrendered to Andy Roddick. The Serbian tennis sensation also earned a hefty $400,000 as part of his championship package while Roger Federer cashed half that at $200,000.
If Djokovic keeps up this form, he’ll be a good bet on the US Open. I’d lay down a couple hundred on it.
