Lewis Hamilton On Track For Driver's Championship With Win at 2007 F1 Japan Grand Prix
McLaren-Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton got to the checkered flag first at the very wet and wild 2007 F1 Japan Grand Prix at the Fuji Speedway to earn himself 10 points to extend his lead in the Driver’s Championship standings over teammate Fernando Alonso. Lewis Hamilton’s victory gives him a total of 107 points in the Driver’s Championships with Fernando Alonso back in second with 95 points. Fernando Alonso couldn’t add any points as he wasn’t able to finish the race when his McLaren-Mercedes F1 car was tapped into a spin by Sebastian Vettel’s STR-Ferrari, and Alonso smashed into the outside wall.
The first 19 laps of the 2007 F1 Japan Grand Prix were raced behind the safety car because of the wet and wild conditions on the Fuji Speedway from the very rainy Japanese weather. Lewis Hamilton started the race in pole position. Fernando Alonso was second in the grid, giving the McLaren-Mercedes the front row. Ferrari filled the second row of the starting grid with Kimi Raikkonen on 3rd place and Felipe Massa on the fourth spot.
Lewis Hamilton led the race most of the way, and moved down to 4th spot after his first pit stop, but was able to regain the lead after 41 laps to take it all the way to the checkered flag, beating out Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen of Renault in 2nd place and Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari who came in 3rd.
One of the more magical performances of the 2007 F1 Japan Grand Prix was of Renault’s Heikki Kovalainen, who started race in 11th position of the starting grid, but climbed all the way up to 2nd place, and earning himself his first trip to the podium and also Renault’s first trip to the podium this 2007 Formula One Season.
One of the more exciting duels was between Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and BMW’s Robert Kubica who were still dicing it out against each other in every turn all the way until the checkered flag. Ferarri’s Felipe Massa was able to reach the finish line with just a .2 second lead over Robert Kubica’s BMW in a great display of F1 racing competition. Felipe Massa finished the race in 6th and Kubica was on 7th.
David Coulthard of Red Bull was able to secure a 4th place finish with Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella managing a 5th place finish to earn him points for the Driver’s Championship.
2 more racedays are left in the 2007 F1 Season, and 20 points are up for grabs. With McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton having a 12 point advantage over team mate Fernando Alonso, and 17 points over 3rd placer Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari, Hamilton looks to be on track to winning the F1 Driver’s Championship in his rookie season. As long as nothing disastrous would happen to Lewis Hamilton in the next two races, then it can be assured that Lewis Hamilton will be crowned as the F1 World Champion of the 2007 season.
The next F1 race will be held on October 7 at Shanghai, China for the 2007 Formula 1 Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix. Following that, the last race of the season will be held on October 21 at Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the 2007 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix.
