Kentucky Derby longshots looking to upset Kentucky Derby favorites

Friday, May 4th, 2007 at 10:45 am

The Kentucky Derby has been a graveyard for favorites, which suggests that Curlin’s odds of winning the 133rd Kentucky Derby on Saturday are longer than the 3/1 he’s listed at.

The fastest two minutes in sports belongs to the outsiders. Horses like Giacomo, Smarty Jones and last year’s winner, Barbaro, whose chase for the Triple Crown e2007 Kentucky Derby Oddsnded in the Preakness Stakes after he suffered a leg injury that eventually led to his death. We took a look at Curlin and the other top Derby contenders. Now, here is a look at five darkhorses who could wind up ahead of the 20-horse pack at Churchill Downs.

Any Given Saturday (12/1) – He’s getting a lot of talk going in and it’s because he’s posted good Beyer Speed Figures, hitting 100 in two of his races, but Any Given Saturday is starting from the 18 post, a bad spot for a contender.

Hard Spun (12/1) – Horse players who like Street Sense should also take a close look at Hard Spun before placing their bets. He’s won five of six starts and his morning workout on Monday was timed under 58 seconds, one of the fastest at Churchill Downs ever. He will start from the eight hole, a great spot for him to use his cruising speed through traffic.

Tiago (14/1) – Will history repeat? Bettors who have Tiago on their ticket hope so. He is being billed as this year’s Giacomo, because Mike Smith will be aboard and John Shirreffs is the trainer. Tiago, Giacomo’s half-brother, starts at No. 15.

Bwana Bull (30/1) – He finished fifth to Tiago at Santa Anita, but he’s had outstanding workouts this week and has Javier Castellano aboard. On Monday, he worked an easy six furlongs in 1:14.40. Bwana Bull, who’s dominated Northern California races, breaks from No. 11.

Imawildandcrazyguy (20/1) – Trainer Bill Kaplan calls his gelding “a freight train” and says he’s got the best cardiovascular system of any horse he’s worked with. He’s an excitable speed horse who could set a blazing pace breaking from the No. 5 position.
