Kentucky Derby Contenders: Hard Spun favorite at Oaklawn Park

With the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Monday, many will be watching Kentucky Derby contender Hard Spun closely.

With a 4 for 4 record, Hard Spun has been compared to other Oaklawn favorites like Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, and Lawyer Ron. Like Afleet Alex, Hard Spun won his first two career races at Delaware Park, and like Smarty Jones he was bred in Pennsylvania and won the Pennsylvania Nursery Stake.

“He acts like distance is not a problem,” said Larry Jones, Hard Spun’s trainer. “He just keeps going.

And the farther we gallop him now that we know that we’re going to be running in route races – we’ve increased his gallops – he just thrives. The farther he goes the stronger he gets.”

While Hard Spun was under consideration for the Grade 3 Risen Stakes this past weekend, owner Rick Porter along with Larry Jones decided to go the Oaklawn Park route instead. Doing this will allow the colt 4 weeks between races giving him time to be fresh and ready for the Kentucky Derby.
