Perfect in January? In the immortal words of Agent 86 in the TV classic Get Smart, “Missed it by that much.”

Garnett eclipses SunsPhoenix was one win away from an undefeated month, but ran into a buzzsaw Monday night by the name of Kevin Garnett. The 7-foot all-star power forward scored 44 points and added 11 rebounds as Minnesota halted the Suns’ 17-game winning streak, 121-112.

Not only did it slow down Hurricane Phoenix, but it provided Randy Wittman with arguably the most significant victory of his coaching career. Wittman, making his home debut as head coach of the Timberwolves, also had an unsuccessful three-year stint with Cleveland.

Garnett scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a fall away jumper that gave Minnesota a 118-109 lead with 1:55 remaining. Even the Suns, who score in bunches, couldn’t make up that deficit. In fact, they managed just 19 points in the final quarter.

Garnett’s brilliant performance should silence the critics who claim he doesn’t play well in clutch situations.

The Suns (36-9) now share the best record in the NBA with Dallas. The Mavericks can one-up Phoenix with an expected home win Tuesday night against struggling Seattle. Bodog.com lists Dallas as a 12-point favorite.
