Fountain of Youth Stakes: Nobiz Like Shobiz’ warmup to the 133rd Kentucky Derby
Early Kentucky Derby favorite, Nobiz Like Shobiz had a successful workout in South Florida this Saturday, running five furlongs in a minute flat under Cornelio Velasquez. Although there were several days of rain earlier in the week and the temperature fell to the lower 40’s, trainer Barclay Tagg was not worried.
The cold weather is no problem for the early Kentucky Derby favorite. If Tagg had to wait another day he probably would have had to think about skipping the Fountain of Youth and going to the Fair Grounds the following weekend for the Louisiana Derby.”
This weekend’s workout was the first of three planned for Nobiz Like Showbiz before the Fountain of Youth stakes (Gr. 2) at Gulfstream Park on March 3rd.
Right now, Nobiz Like Shobiz deserves top billing. The son of Albert The Great has won three of four for owner-breeder Elizabeth Valando and trainer Tagg, who won the Derby and Preakness with Funny Cide in 2003.
Nobiz Like Shobiz was much troubled in his lone defeat and, unlike many others in his class, is proven at 1 1/8 miles, having won the Remsen last Nov. 25 at Aqueduct.
He was workmanlike winning the Holy Bull in his 2007 bow Feb. 3 at Gulfstream Park and will remain there for the Fountain of Youth on March 3. The one concern is his habit of lugging in through the stretch, which he did again in the Holy Bull.
The 133rd Kentucky Derby is still weeks days away, but it certainly is not too early to have an opinion on who is the best 3-year-old in the country.
