Federer vs Roddick in Aussie Open semifinals matchup
Australian Open top seed Roger Federer set up a blockbuster semifinal showdown with Andy Roddick at the Australian Open after defeating Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
Federer advanced to an Open era-record 11th consecutive Grand Slam semifinal. Federer leads Roddick 12-1 in career meetings, but at November’s Tennis Masters Cup Roddick held three match points for a straight-sets win before the Swiss clawed back to win.
The Swiss is chasing a third Australian Open crown to add to his titles in 2006 and 2004. An aggressive Federer journeyed to the net 56 times, winning 73 per cent of net approaches en route to extending his perfect record against Robredo to 7-0.
Federer is one win away from his seventh consecutive Grand Slam final as he closes on a 10th career Grand Slam title.
The 25-year-old extended his winning streak (dating back to his title run at the 2006 US Open) to 34 matches, just one shy of his personal record of 35.
Federer is bidding to win his third Grand Slam title in a row and if he does he would be the first man in the Open era to win three consecutive majors twice in his career, having already achieved the feat through wins at 2005 Wimbledon, 2005 US Open and 2006 Australian Open.
Only two other men have won three or more Slams in a row in the Open Era, Rod Laver winning four in the 1969 calendar year, and Pete Sampras collecting three successive majors through 1993 Wimbledon, 1993 US Open and 1994 Australian Open.
