The first has been Roddick’s move to install tennis great Jimmy Connors as coach. Roddick is a brasher, more attacking player under Connors (no surprises there) and while Federer boasts a 12-1 career record over Roddick, the gap between the pair has tightened in the last six months with Roddick taking Federer to four sets at the US Open, holding match points against him at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai in November and beating him at the AAMI Classic exhibition at Kooyong a fortnight ago.

Federer and Roddick will butt heads under lights. The day session belongs to the women’s semifinals with Serena Williams and Nicole Vaidisova featuring in the opening match. Vaidisova made the semifinals at Roland Garros last year, but comes across seven-time slam winner Williams who has become the story of the Open.
