Breeders Cup Races denied Grade 1 status
The American Graded Stakes Committee announced on Wednesday that the request made by Breeder’s Cup for the event’s three new $1 million races to be given Grade 1 status, was denied in the committees Tuesday meeting.
In a Statement made by the secretary of the committe
e Andy Schweigardt, he said that the committee denied the request over concerns regarding the consistency of its grade-ranking process and the lack of historical basis for assigning the new races grades.
The Breeders’ Cup was asking for Grade 1 Status for three new $1 million races: the Juvenile Turf, the Filly and Mare Sprint, and the Dirt Mile. As per the committee’s rules however, they require that a stakes race is to be ran for two years under identical conditions before a race maybe eligible for a grade (though racing organizations may request an exemption).
“In all three cases, the committee did not believe that they should deviate from the normal process,” Schweigardt said.
