5 March Madness longshots that could make it all the way to NCAA Final Four

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Here are five March Madness teams worth taking a long look at and, if things click, could make a run to NCAA Final Four at Atlanta.

GEORGETOWN: The Hoyas have one of the nation’s top frontcouts, led by junior forward Jeff Green and junior center Roy Hibbert. And other than a Feb. 26 loss to Syracuse, Georgetown has been streaking.

If the Hoyas reach the finals of the Big East Tournament, pencil them in for a No. 2 seed.

MARYLAND: You can never gNCAA Basketball Betting Oddso wrong riding a hot team into the NCAA Tournament, and the Terps qualify. Behind senior D.J. Strawberry, son of former baseball star Darryl, Maryland has surged into the Top 25.

The Terps have beaten Duke twice and North Carolina in their seven-game winning streak.

TEXAS A&M: Coach Billy Gillespie has led the Aggies to arguably the best season in school history, and they have a star in guard Acie Law IV.

Texas A&M is one of the few squads to beat Kansas this year, but the Aggies have otherwise struggled on the road against ranked teams.

BUTLER: The Horizon League regular season champs perhaps peaked too early this season. The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and Gonzaga in one stretch early in the season but alternated wins and losses for a two-week stretch in mid-February.

However, their run to the Horizon Tournament finals could have them back on track and poised for some upsets. The Bulldogs could be this year’s George Mason.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: If Butler isn’t the 2007 version of George Mason, then the Salukis might be. They haven’t lost since Jan. 13 entering Sunday when they played for Missouri Valley Conference title.

The MVC is the nation’s top mid-major conference and could get four teams in the NCAA Tournament this season, so the level of competition is high. SIU also beat Butler this season, but that was its only game against a ranked team.
