NFL Result: New England beats New York

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

NFL Result: New England beats New YorkNew England Patriots made history Saturday night with a thrilling 38-35 win over the New York Giants.

The New England Patriots became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on the schedule, and that one was only 14-0. Led by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady engineered a comeback from a 12-point deficit and smashed the New England Patriots’ league mark for consecutive victories.

“It’s special,” said New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whose record-breaking 50th TD pass of the season, a 65-yard bomb to New England Patriots Randy Moss, completed a rally from a 12-point deficit midway through the third quarter. “But we’ve won three Super Bowls. And as good as this feels, I think we all know that it’s not the real goal that we’ve set for ourselves. “We kind of know what’s ahead of us out there.”

In gaining their 19th straight win over two seasons, the New England Patriots went on top on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s 50th touchdown pass of the year and Moss’ 23rd TD reception. It came with 11:06 remaining.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady beat Peyton Manning’s mark of 49 touchdown passes and New England Patriots Randy Moss broke Jerry Rice’s record of 22 TD receptions. And the New England Patriots finished with an incredible 589 points for the season, another single-season record.

The New York Giants (10-6) already guaranteed a playoff game against Tampa Bay next weekend and with little to play for except spoiling New England’s perfect ride, led 28-16 in the third quarter. It was the New England Patriots’ largest deficit all year as the Giants showed no fear and plenty of versatility, scoring the most points New England allowed in a game during this remarkable run.

NCAA Football Result: Arizona State vs Texas

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Arizona State vs TexasTexas Longhorns trounced Arizona State Sun Devils 52-34 in Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Friday night.

Texas Longhorns was led by Texas Longhorns’ quarterback Colt McCoy but someone stole the show, Chris Jessie, the stepson of Texas coach Mack Brown, inadvertently becoming part of the game. Texas Longhorns was leading 21-0 and the Arizona State Sun Devils driving early in the second quarter, Arizona State Sun Devils’ quarterback Rudy Carpenter dropped back to pass and was hit by linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy. The ball squirted backward, toward the Texas Longhorns’ sideline. Chris Jessie, a member of his stepfather’s football operations staff, stepped about a yard onto the field and was motioning toward a player when he reached down and appeared to touch the ball with his left thumb.

Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Roy Miller slapped the ball away from the sideline and defensive end Aaron Lewis recovered and returned it to about the Arizona State Sun Devils 44. After a 12-minute review, officials reversed the play. They ruled that Chris Jessie touched the ball, which is illegal interference, an unsportsmanlike foul. The ball reverted to the Arizona State Sun Devils and Texas Longhorns was penalized half the distance to the goal, giving Arizona State Sun Devils fourth-and-3 at the 7. Devils’ quarterback Rudy Carpenter threw a touchdown pass to Arizona State Sun Devils’ wide receiver Chris McGaha.

The 86 points were the fourth-most in the Holiday Bowl’s 30-year history, which is full of crazy plays and wild finishes. Texas Longhorns set team records for points in a bowl game and with its fourth straight postseason win.

NCAA College Football Result: Purdue vs Central Michigan

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Purdue vs Central MichiganPurdue Boilermakers top the Central Michigan Chippewas 51-48 to win the Motor City Bowl. Purdue Boilermakers kicker Chris Summers delivered the final blow with a 40-yard field goal as time expired.

Purdue Boilermakers quarterback Curtis Painter threw for a school-record 546 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Purdue Boilermakers build three 21-point leads and set up the winning kick.

Purdue Boilermakers with a 9-5 record did not seem inspired to play early in the game, perhaps because playing in Detroit is not exactly what a Big Ten team has in mind when it dreams of playing in the postseason. Purdue Boilermakers seemed to get fired up and appeared to be rolling toward a rout, leading 27-6 midway through the second quarter, 34-13 at halftime and 41-20 early in the third. But the Central Michigan Chippewas proved they also want to win the title.

Central Michigan Chippewas comeback started with Central Michigan’s quarterback Dan LeFevour scoring pass to Central Michigan Chippewas wide receiver Bryan Anderson at 10:19 of the third and the quarterback tied the game with two runs late in the quarter. Purdue Boilermakers answered with Boilermakers’ running back Jaycen Taylor’s TD run midway through the fourth quarter and seemed to seal the win with a sack when Central Michigan had the ball with 2:15 and no timeouts.
