Yankees, Red Sox begin another rivalry for crucial MLB playoffs stretch
This is what it’s all about. Friday-Monday five-game series looming in Fenway between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. We’ll resist the temptation, because two teams can not define a league or a sport. What it’s all about is 30 teams and eight MLB playoff spots and nearly 2,000 games.
And it’s been our great good luck to be sitting in on a 12-season stretch when both teams have been at or near the top of their games, an eight-season stretch during they have been one-two in the AL East and a three-year stretch during which both have made the MLB playoffs.
So clear off your schedules and lay in an extra supply of whatever fuel you need to get through the games. It’s Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. It’s what we’ve been waiting all year to see. It’s the best show in sports.
The Red Sox Nation will need to pace itself Friday afternoon when the first-place New York Yankees carry their 1 1/2-game lead into Fenway Park. Fans will have five games’ worth of Bronx cheers to supply, beginning with Friday’s day/night doubleheader.
With New York arriving a game and a half up following its 12-2 loss Thursday afternoon to the Orioles, Boston would have to score a decisive 4-1 series win for there to be a change on top. And only a Yankees sweep would seriously dent the race; even with four wins, they’d move on with a bridgeable 4 1/2-game lead.
The Yankees and Red Sox have been vulnerable, yet immovable. As has been their entire division — returning to its familiar standing, 1998 through 2004. Both teams have their unique assets — Boston, defense and a feared two-headed offensive monster; New York, bullpen and the mentality to disrespect any deficit — but share the same best quality.
If you are a fan, seeing these games is as good as it gets. If you are a player, it gets better, because you get to feel them.
They’re at it again. The New York Yankees travel to the Green Monster to take on the Boston Red Sox as age-old rivalry renews this week. Bet on baseball and get your World Series Odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.
