Pacquiao’s Road to Disappointment No.2
It is simply called ‘The Battle.’
Two little words, one small phrase. Yet Erik Morales vs. Manny Pacquiao II involves so much.
That’s particularly true for Pacquiao, a Filipino fighter who could run for president in his homeland and probably win by a landslide.
His reputation is at stake. There’s stature to reclaim, pride to restore.
See, the last time these two fought last March 19, Pacquiao had enough distractions that one wondered whether he or Mike Tyson was in the ring. Pacquiao became embroiled in a dispute with his then-promoter, Murad Muhammad, who subsequently was dispatched following a protracted court battle.
Pacquiao even was at odds, pardon the pun, with longtime trainer Freddie Roach and for a brief period sent him packing, too. Their misunderstanding,
involving the type of gloves to be used, spilled into the ring before, during and after Pacquiao lost by decision.
None of that now.
The rematch is set for Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. At stake is the World Boxing Council international featherweight title.
”The camp last time was filled with a lot of distractions and our goal, the whole team’s, has been to let Manny be the best Manny he could be,” manager Shelly Finkel said.
”And we believe that is what is going to happen in this fight. He is going to be able to enter the ring as the best Manny possible,” Finkel added.
Roach agreed but added that unlike the first fight, nothing Morales will do will be unexpected.
Pacquiao also said the toughest opponent he has faced was Morales. He says he won’t change his style for the rematch.
Pacquiao was asked whom he’d like to fight beyond Morales, possibly Marco Antonio Barrera of Iztacalco, Mexico.
”I want nothing more than to beat Morales, maybe we will do a Barrera fight. But right now, I am only focusing on the Morales fight,” said Manny Pacquiao.
