EURO 2008 qualifiers: Key strikers absent for top European teams
With this weekend’s UEFA EURO 2008 qualifiers in sight, coaches across Europe are counting the cost as injuries take their toll of national-team players.
Olympique Lyonnais forward Sidney Govou has been released from the France squad to face Scotland and the Faroe Islands in Group B after failing to recover from an ankle injury sustained during Lyon’s weekend win at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.
However, the quota of players from the French champions remains at eight after coach Raymond Domenech called up defender Sébastien Squillaci. The 26-year-old will provide cover for William Gallas who is troubled by a thigh injury.
Chelsea FC striker Andriy Shevchenko is suffering from a high temperature and on Saturday. Coach Oleh Blokhin said: “The doctors think he possibly has a viral infection.
If it continues for another day or two, he will be in no condition to play. It is therefore uncertain whether he will be in the team for Saturday.”
Meanwhile, the Cyprus Football Association has confirmed that APOEL FC defender Demetris Daskalakis has been called up for the Group D qualifiers against Ireland and Wales, replacing AEK Larnaca FC’s Andreas Konstantinou who was injured in training with Angelos Anastasiadis’s national team.
