Cowboys visit Philadelphia for Terrell Owens’ homecoming game
The Philadelphia Eagles defensive strength has long been its secondary. The Eagles have had three Pro Bowl cornerbacks and two Pro Bowl safeties this decade alone. If you want to throw the ball, bring it on, say the Eagles. But this week may be different.
The Cowboys visit Philadelphia for Terrell Owens’ homecoming game. He’s an elite receiver. So is Terry Glenn. So is tight end Jason Witten. All have been to the Pro Bowl.
The Eagles have three Pro Bowlers themselves in the secondary: CB Lito Sheppard and safeties Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis. Also, CB Sheldon Brown has been an NFC Defensive Player of the Week and is approaching Pro Bowl status himself.
But the Eagles haven’t been as strong on the field thus far this season. Sheppard has missed the last three games with an ankle injury and nickel cornerRod Hood sat out the Monday night game against Green Bay with a heel injury.
Joselio Hanson, a Texas Tech product who opened the season as the fourth corner, starts in place of Sheppard. Dexter Wynn, who was signed off the streets on Sept. 12, is the nickel corner. Dustin Fox, who was promoted from the practice roster on Sept. 19, is the fourth corner.
That patchwork secondary ranks 28th in the NFL in pass defense. Eli Manning lit Philadelphia up for 371 yards passing in the second week. Andre Johnson (Houston), Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer (Giants) have pinned 100-yard receiving games on the Eagles.
Maybe Sheppard will return Sunday. Maybe Hood will be back. Maybe both will return. Maybe neither.
Look for Drew Bledsoe to put the football in the air regardless of who is in the Philadelphia secondary.
