Chrysler Classic Odds: PGA players jockey for Top 50 slots
Now that the Ryder Cup and American Express Championship are done in Europe, we’re back to grind-it-out events in America as the fall portion of the PGA Tour schedule winds down. These week the gang travels to Greensboro, N.C., for the Chrysler Classic, but there aren’t many big names there.
Only five of the top 30 on the money list (Carl Petterson, Brett Quigley, Tim Clark, Lucas Glover, Mike Weir) are in attendance and only 16 of the top 50. It leaves the door open for just about anything to happen.
Fall golf on the PGA Tour usually winds down to jockeying for position. The guys near the top look to secure Top 30 spots for the Tour Championship at the end of the year. Finishing in the Top 50 matters for small-field events and the majors and, of course, being in the Top 125 means securing your card for next year. That becomes what it’s all about.
With that Top 30 line in sight, expect a good week from Villegas, who is +$5000 at BetOnline.com. He’s here to stay.
Other names to look for:
Petterson: No one in this field has won more money this year, and he has a good history of winning in the fall. The Swede won last fall in Tampa at the tough Innisbrook layout and also won at Memorial this year, two noble tracks to claim victories. He’s a solid play here as well. He was T-11 here last year. At BetOnline.com, Petterson is +$4000, which is a nice number for someone with his cash and fall finish pedigree.
Lucas Glover: He has been T-13 or better in his past three starts and still has a lot to play for the rest of the year as well. He’s at +$2500 to win at BetOnline.com with a half-dozen other players, the shortest odds of all behind only K.J. Choi and Davis Love III at +$2000.
Some veterans like Love and Kenny Perry are interesting to watch. Neither has played well for a variety of reasons this year, but a win down the stretch cures a lot of ills. Love, a native North Carolinian, always loves to play well back at home.
PGA Golf Tips: If your golf wagers need to go somewhere, play some individual matchups head-to-head. Mike Weir, as predicted, did play well last week at the PGA and that may carry over. We like him this week.
