Cardinals beat Tigers for first World Series title since 1982
Jeff Weaver scattered four hits over eight innings and David Eckstein drove in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2 to win their first World Series title in 24 years.
Scott Rolen drove in a run and Yadier Molina had three hits and scored twice at Busch Stadium in St. Louis as the Cardinals won Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven championship series in five games.
It’s the 10th World Series championship for St. Louis, second-most behind the New York Yankees’ 26 titles, and the first since 1982.
The Cardinals’ 83 wins during the regular season were the fewest ever for a World Series champ.
Weaver allowed just one earned run, striking out nine and walking one. Adam Wainwright pitched the ninth inning in relief and struck out Brandon Inge for the final out with runners on first and third.
