Can the Seattle Seahawks overcome the “Super Bowl Loser Curse?”

NFL history has not been kind to Super Bowl losers. The last five Super Bowl losers haven’t made the playoffs the following year, but don’t tell that to Seattle Seahawks fans.

Six months after Seattle lost 21-10 to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XL, that sour taste is still in the mouths of many. For fans who entered Qwest Field to watch the Seahawks preseason game versus the Dallas Cowboys, a common theme was on.

Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl OddsEveryone’s mind: the Seahawks getting back to the Super Bowl. Even though All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson and wide receiver Joe Jurevicius departed because of free agency, there still are high expectations from fans that the team won’t be a “one-hit wonder” at the Super Bowl.

Even with the losses of Hutchinson and Jurevicius, Seattle kept a major part of its offense intact, with the re-signing of Shaun Alexander, the reigning league MVP. Last year, Alexander set a single-season National Football League touchdown record with 28 as the Seahawks led the league in scoring.

In order to have a good year, the Seahawks have to stay healthy and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck needs to have another outstanding year. As long as the team keeps its focus, there isn’t a reason why Seattle can’t go to the Super Bowl again, and even win it.

The defending NFC champions will be working on their entire offense. Last season’s NFL leaders in scoring managed three points and 56 yards on 14 plays Sunday before the starting backs and receivers left after two drives. They also had three penalties — two on receivers Bobby Engram and Nate Burleson for false starts.

Sure, it was just one, fake game, with three more to go before they get real Sept. 10 in Detroit. But the Seahawks’ realization is just one of many aspects of Saturday’s loss that the newly enlightened Seahawks will be working on in training camp before the next game, Sunday at Indianapolis.
