Another blow to US Soccer: McBride retires from international soccer competition
United States striker Brian McBride said he is retiring from international soccer. McBride, 34, plays for Fulham in the English Premier League and is the second-leading scorer in national team history with 30 goals in 95 games. He is also the only American player to score in two World Cups.
The three-time World Cup veteran has the second-most appearances for the U.S. in World Cup matches with 10, starting all five games in 2002 and scoring against Portugal and Mexico. He also had the team’s only goal in 1998.
”This is a special day in that I have the opportunity to thank U.S. Soccer for all it has done for me and my family,” Brian McBride said. “The consistent and determined efforts of the coaches, staff, and players at U.S. Soccer have helped bless me with the honor of being a part of three World Cups, playing the game I love.”
McBride, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., was the tournament MVP and leading scorer with four goals in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He led Fulham last season with 10 goals.
