Patriots are still in the playoff hunt but Brady must step up his game

No, don’t count ‘em out yet. The New England Patriots are still in the hunt for a playoff spot and if things work out well for the defending Super Bowl champions in the coming weeks before the NFL playoffs, they could give the Indianapolis Colts a run for their money.

The Patriots are still leading the AFC East with a 6-5 record and a shoo-in to win in NFL week 13 because they will play division-rival New York Jets. Still, key injuries have decimated the Patriots who were just a shadow of the old team that once dominated the league.

Though some of their key defensive players were back last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots still ran out of steam and evetually lost, 26-16. The Chiefs’ offensive trio of Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez and new running back Larry Johnson simply overpowered the now low-scoring Patriots.

Injuries also spread to the Patriot offense, which played without Corey Dillon and other running backs and some offensive linemen as well as wide receivers David Givens and Bethel Johnson. Relegated to his fourth string running back, Tom Brady didn’t have too many offensive options to hack out a come-from-behind win. Three deflections by the Chiefs’ defense that led to interceptions were the telling factor of the game.

Though the Patriots are definitely out of the running for the AFC crown, they are still in the hunt for a playoff berth and another AFC East title. As long as the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins keep on losing, the NFL playoffs are still a big possibility for Bill Belichick’s men.

They are still however, a dangerous opponent. If they manage to be at their full strength in time for the playoffs, Belichick will have the Patriots ready and Brady to lead them to another serious Super Bowl bid.

But if Brady doesn’t pull off his old tricks and step up his game, you can be sure it won’t happen in January, either.
