Dallas Mavericks is a National Basketball Association team based in Dallas , Texas . The Maverick is one of the seven teams In the Midwest DivisDallas Mavericksion of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association. The franchise plays in Reunion Arena in Dallas , Texas and wear jerseys of blue, white and green. The Dallas team's name derives from Texas 's history cattle ranching. The Dallas began NBA play in the 1980-81 season, after the NBA granted an expansion team franchise to real estate developer Donald J. Carter. The Mavericks' draft picks in their first seven years yielded talented players such as guards Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper, Forwards Mark Aguirre, Detlef Schrempf and Roy Tarpley and center Sam Perkins. By 1988, the Maverick had became a Western Conference power and gave the Magic Johnson-led Los Angeles Lakers a tough competition in the Conference Finals, but the Lakers were at height of their run defeating Dallas Maverick on their way to second consecutive championship. The 1996-97 season saw a number of changes to the franchise and that created the foundation of their later success. Don Nelson was hired as general manager and Michael Finley was brought from Phoenix Suns. The additions of Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash in 1988 helped the franchise to go to their first playoffs appearance in eleven years in 2001.
Before the start of the 2004-05 season, the Mavericks once again underwent several major roster changes. Dallas acquired Jerry Stackhouse, the number 5 overall draft pick that netted rookie point guard Devin Harris, Erick Dampier, Alan Henderson and Jason Terry. Avery Johnson, the Mavericks head coach as of March 2005 has focused on defense and has propelled the Mavericks from an all-offense team. Josh Howard and Devin Harris are new talents in the franchise. The Maverick 25 th anniversary season proved to be another successful one. They finished with a record of 58-24, second best in franchise history. The team made their fifth appearance in the NBA Playoffs and their 11 th overall, tying the longest streak of consecutive playoff appearances in franchise history. Dallas Maverick has won one Division Title. Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the Western Conference and are trailing behind the Detroit Pistons by only a half game for the best record in the NBA as of March, 2006.
